Trying to get pregnant. Next step?

My husband and I started trying to get pregnant back in March.  I am 29 and he is 30.  We finally decided it was time to start a family and nothing is happening.  For the first couple of months, I was super excited and always wondering if I got pregnant and taking tests and then my period would show up and I would be bummed.  I sort of gave up a couple of months ago because it just looks like it's not going to happen.  My cycle has always been weird and I have always been afraid that I wouldn't be able to get pregnant...it's just always been a feeling I've had.  My cycles can be anywhere from 25-46 days and from really heavy to fairly light.  I just don't know where to go from here.  When I had my yearly gyn appt in March, I told her we were starting to try for a baby and expressed my concerns.  Her advice was to just relax and give it some time and not to get too worked up about it.  Well, wouldn't you know it, the month we started trying my period was extremely late and I thought I was pregnant.  I took pregnancy tests and then, on day 46, there it was.  It was super depressing.

How much longer should I wait before I talk to my Dr?  I'm just not sure what the next step would be.  Do I go to a specialist?  Do I go back to my regular gyn?  What info should I have ready?  I'm just ready to throw in the towel, but I really want a baby!!

Thanks everyone.  I'm going to give the temp thing another try and I'll have to get some ovulation sticks as well.  I'm hoping this works for us!

When I started with the OTK it was probably the easiest thing ever. I just made sure to get the digital kit so I didn't have to mess with any questionable lines and tested starting at the 6th day and today is day 16 and I got the smiley face today!!:) we are bd'ing today!! So what im saying is the Clear Blue Easy ovulation test kit is so simple and also 99.99% accurate on finding your surge days!!

Ovuvue will automatically chart symptoms for you and even let you back it up and email to yourself or export it to your gyn

I use ovuvue from the android market and just enter my temp info while in bed. After entering several dates for prior cycles it will predict your ovulation and fertility days and consider the temps and tracked symptoms you enter for your current cycle and provide you with info and symptoms used for various fertility methods

Yeah, the 1st month or 2 can be frustrating as you get to know your body better. It's a good thing I started charting because I realized that even though I had a 36 day cycle, I didn't ovulate until day 25!

Also, I still get "confused" charts on Fertility Friend because sometimes my cervical mucus is fertile after the temperature rise or some other thing that causes it to doubt my day of ovulation; but after months of paying close attention to my body and charting my temps I am sure of when I ovulate. So it just takes some time. Hope you get your positive soon.

I completely agree with the charting your temps.  It's soo confusing and frustrating at first but please give it at least 3 months, you'll see a pattern, if not then I'd go see the dr. again.  Mine are crazy like that as well but I do know I ovulate, been seeing an RE for about a year now.  You can do temps and ovulation predictor kits, I did that for awhile, just to see if my temps matched up with the test strips from the OPK.  Anyways, best of luck and keep us posted on how things go! :)

Thanks!  I did try that for one month and then I sort of got frustrated and stopped.  It seemed confused about my ovulation day.  I suppose if I keep with it I should see a pattern.  I think I just need to stick with it this time and see where it takes me.

I would try to do an ovulation kit to see where you are there. My dr told me we had to be trying for a year before we would be able to see her w any issues were having. Of course, if I was really freaking out she would see me sooner.

Do you chart your cycles? It's possible you don't ovulate, and if that's the case there is medication to help you. You will need a basal thermometer that you can get at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, etc. Use this thermometer to take your temp first thing every morning (I mean before you get out of bed or move around) around the same time and plot it on a chart. I use Fertility Friend. com (it's free and easy). This site will also give you a lot of information. Usually after 3 months of charting your basal body (waking) temperature you will see a pattern and can tell if and when you ovulate. Ovulation is shown by a jump in temperature that stays elevated until your next period. Since your cycles are so long, you could just be missing your 2 or so fertile days each month.

If you are just missing your ovulation than this should help you time sex better and you don't need to see a doctor. If you discover you aren't ovulating, this should help your doctor diagnose you and get you going on some fertility meds. Also, a lot of doctors want you to try for a year before trying fertility treatments, but it looks like its been about 9 months for you so I would try charting for a few months and then see the doctor if necessary.

Good luck!
