Tubal Ligation question...

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my fourth child.  My husband and I both agree that we are done having children.  Since I'm going to have this baby via c-section, we thought it would be easiest for me to get a tubal ligation.   I had a prenatal appointment, and my OBGYN said that she would put two titanium clamps on the falopian tubes and that they would eventually disinegrate (sp?) and the clamp would be left on one end of the falopian tube.   Then she said that i could have a Essure (a coil type thing place in my falopian tubes...) placed in.  The more i think about it, the more nervous i get about having a foreign thing left inside by body for the rest of my life...  what if the clamp comes lose?   What if the coil..uncoils?  (probably rare, but it COULD happen...)
Has anyone else had a tubal ligation?  If so, how did your doctor perform it and did you have any side effects??

I had a tubal ligation at age 28 after having my two kids.  I did not want them going through the belly button and blindly cauterizing the tubes, because I thought there was a chance that it didn't work properly.  Instead, I had a mini-laparotomy (about a 3-4" incision) and had him pull out the tubes and literally tie them.  Unfortunately, I went on to have a hysterectomy at age 30, so I don't know if the tubal was as permanent as it is supposed to be, but I agree that leaving something in your body seems a bit strange.  Is there any reason why they wouldn't just tie the tubes, like the good old days?

Maybe it's new technology, as I had it done 20 years ago.  In my house, hubby couldn't handle having the vasectomy, so the brave wifey went ahead with the surgery, LOL.

We are s-u-r-e we are done having children.   At my last c-section, my doctor said that my uterus was starting to thin, and we both think 4 is a good number - so no changing our minds.  We also talked about him having a vesectomy, and we both pretty much agree that since i'm having a c-section anyway, why not get a tubal ligation while they're in there?   But i do see your point, thank you!

It is actually more effective and safer for a man to have a vasectomy. Also a vasectomy is more easily reversed (and less expensive to reverse) should you change your mind. Tubal ligations do fail. We get many women in here who've had tubal ligations and have either changed their mind and want another baby or think they're pregnant.
