Ultrasound Opinions Needed

Question

I went to my first OB appt. a couple weeks ago, and had a list of all the tests that I can get. . . if wanted.  I'm new to all of this, and am not sure.

One of the tests that was recommended to me was an early ultrasound that must be done between 11 to 13 weeks pregnant.  I'm not sure what they are all testing for at this point, but I believe it will tell me if the pregnancy is considered at risk for certain things.  (I'm guessing Down's and stuff)

I don't know many people who have normal ultrasounds that early.  As most seem to have their first ultrasound at 16-20 weeks, along with the quad screening.

Just wanted to get your opinions about this early ultrasound?  Mine is scheduled, but I'm just wondering if I should keep it?  And have any of you had it, and would you recommend it?

well you wont be able to hear anything with a doppler yet..probably not for the next 4 weeks.

Thanks guys.  I just want to see this baby again.  It makes me reassured that there is still a baby in my tummy with a beating heart, that is growing.  I'm contemplating the whole doppler machine just for reassurance.

Here in the uk we have our first scan at 12 weeks. I had them earlier than that because im high risk ( 6,8,10 and 12 ) If you look in my photos you will see my 12 week scan and how amazing they are at that stage.

Ultra-sounds have no risks involved, all those tests, amnio...etc. they do. keep that in mind. when i was prego i always wished i cud borrow the ultrasound machine for 9 months, and watch her every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i also had the screen at 12 weeks. it was testing for downs. i really didnt care as much about those results as i did about the chance to see my little one an extra time! it was nice to see a baby rather than a little bean. i had it done because my insurance covered it completely. good luck!

Thanks girls!  Regardless of what I found out, I wouldn't terminate the pregnancy.  It took me so long to get pregnant, I see this as nothing but a huge blessing. :-D

I think I'm going to keep the appointment just for a chance to peek at my little one.  I've had two transvaginal ultrasounds already at 5 weeks and then almost 7 weeks, but honestly, the baby looked more like a "blob" than a baby.

I'm on my third pregnancy and with each one I got ultrasounds at different times. 7 weeks. and 13 weeks.. 18 weeks 24 weeks. It depends on the doctor. Mine does early ultrasounds to make sure the pregnancy is viable. plus I think he knows it makes us mommys feel better.

I had my Down's screening done at 12 weeks.  They just tell you if you are high risk for some chromosomal abnormalties and may benefit from amnio.  It was a fun test and you get to see your baby!

I agree about the certain blood tests and stuff, which is why I chose not to do some of them, but I would never turn down a chance for an ultrasound and a peek at my little one. :)

Its totally up to you.  They are testing for things like Downs. (There is ahigher risk of downs with women in their later 30's and 40's) The rate of faulse positives are high and this is why I chose not to do the tests.
I guess what you have to ask yourself is, If you were told your baby has downs, would you terminate or contiune with the pregancy.  If you choose to keep this baby no matter what, then this test should not matter.
