Was told no heartbeat at 8 Weeks and now there is one?

I was told no heartbeat at 8 weeks and now there is one?
by toodles777, 4 minutes ago
Dr. Downing please help!
This week I am 12 weeks pregnant and at 8 weeks i had an u/s and there was no heartbeat. The docotrs have decided to let my body run its natural course over the past 4 weeks and miscarry on its own. The first 3 weeks after they told me the baby was dead i had no signs of a miscarriage, no cramping, no bleeding. Then I had another ultrasound about a week ago and confirmed still no heartbeat at 11 weeks and still no signs of miscarriage except that the baby was still the size of an 8 week old fetus (it had not grown over the past 3 weeks). Then suddenly, 3 days ago i started bleeding and having sever cramping and i passed what i thought was the fetus. Then the next day, when i was waiting for my check up with my doctors i began bleeding and contractions uncontrollably and was rushed to the hospital. They kept me there for 6 hours as I passed several clots and tissue until my cervix finally closed and everything subsided. They did an ultrasound and found what may be some dead tissue or a very shrunken fetus still in there, so they scheduled me for a d&c on wednesday. Today, I had another check up with my doctor to check my vitals for the surgery tomorrow and when he did the ultrasound he found a 5 week size fetus moving with a heartbeat inside my uterus. He showed me the screen and I saw it too. To both of our amazment, I the fetus has shrunk considerably smaller than when I saw it at 8 weeks with no heartbeat but it qwas clear as day on the screen that that baby was moving and alive. To both of our amazement we are chalking this up to a phenomenon, some kind of miracle because we both understand the odds of this pregnancy actually going full term with a "normal" baby. The d&c is still scheduled for tomorrow but i just cant bring myself to go through with it if after all this time there is still something alive in there. So they are monitoring me closely over the next week to see if the baby dies or not and then rescheduling the d&c after that point. Please help and tell me what are the odds of this happening? My husband and I are very tired and scared and the last thing we expected to hear today was that the baby has a hearbeat. what in the heck is going on?
Thankyou, "Toodles 777"

oh, I'm sorry.  That is really hard. What is your doctor saying? Do they think expulsion is imminent or are they being hopeful?  A missed miscarriage can happen if a baby starts to grow but then stops. This is what happens with the inability to detect a heart beat. Hope that is not the case for you and they just couldn't hear/see the heart beat.  The best thing to do is to get your HCG checked to see if it begins falling. I'm hoping for a good outcome but sadly, this often ends with miscarriage.  However, women go on to have another pregnancy after without any issues. hugs to you. Hoping for the best.
Hi All, My case is much different. I had 3 miscarriage. For all three miscarriage doctor's answer is like... there is no heartbeat and growth found in baby. But the similar thing happens in all three pregnancy. When I confirm that Am pregnant, I use to go to doctor. They asked me to take a transvaginal ultrasound scan. And Doctor said Baby is good and having good heart beat at 6 weeks. When I take Same Transvaginal ultrasound scan at 9th week doctor told like no growth and heartbeat seen after 6 week.... This is the only thing happened in all three pregnancy. I have a doubt in transvaginal ultrasound scan. Really Am much affected with this. Not every human body is same. So transvaginal ultrasound can affect baby's growth it seems in my case. Am much worried on this. Can Anyone help me on this?
I am not sure it is the transvaginal ultrasound causing the miscarriages.  I'm so sorry you are going through this.  You could opt not to have it.  I mean, if you are going to miscarry anyway, you will find out.  So, opt not to have the ultrasound done.  If you have a miscarriage still, can you see a fertility specialist. The fertility specialist does different testing.  The anatomy of your uterus, hormone levels, etc. will be evaluated.  https://www.centerforhumanreprod.com/blog/causes-of-early-miscarriages-at-6-8-weeks

No, I don`t have children. This will be my first, I hope. It`s a girl. I`m more optimistic this time because I past the first trimester and the half of second. The chanses for spontaneous abortion are smaller now. I hope God will help us.
The corrective surgery for now is delayed. Before I want to get pregnant for the second child then I will go through that.
The fact that you got pregnant only a month after meeting the baby`s father means that you are fertile. The vaginal septum that you describe can`t stretch so much. I think that c-section is indicated in your case. Good luck.

My pregnancy was a complete surprise.  I had one miscarriage in 2000, and went for 7 years without conceiving again.  Of course, I got pregnant only a month and a half after meeting my baby's father.  We are 30w4d today!  No problems yet, I believed I have been truly blessed with this pregnancy.  I am carrying to one side, which is the uterus that I am pregnant in ... the right uterus.  The baby is also breach right now, but the doc says that we still have time for her to make her final turn.  =)

I have a vaginal septum that separates my vagina with a thick ban of skin (the septum separates the two cervix).  I am not sure if the septum has enough stretching power to be able to deliver vaginally.  My doctor said that the septum tearing could cause major hemeraging.. so we are going to determine next week weither or not it is best to do a C-section or to try vaginal birth.  There are not many women with our conditions that are able to deliver vaginally.

Do you have any other children?

Good luck with your corrective surgery.  I do not think that I will go through with surgery if this pregnancy goes as smoothly over the next 8 weeks as it has the first 30.  =)

I read your post and I`m so happy that your uterus haven`t made you problems with the pregnancy. I have partial septate uterus (just e septum divides the upper part of the uterus in two horns but I have one cervix) and I had 2 miscarriages and now I`m pregnant for the third time (22 weeks) and I hope everything will be ok till the end. After the second misc. I supposed to do hysteroscopy to cut off that septum but I get pregnant (it was suprise from God).
I know that uterus bidelfus has better prognosis that uterus septate.
Good luck!

Funny you brought that up... I had to be checked for a double pregnancy, because I have a didelphic uterus, or "double uterus".  I have a complete duplication, with double cervix as well, I only have two overies though.. one attached to each uterus.

It's an amazing thing!

OP - Good luck with your pregnancy.  It sounds as though you may have gotten pregnant again or that you were carrying twins as someone else mentioned.  Somehow I find it hard to believe that a fetus can shrink to a 5 week old fetus after already measuring 8 weeks.  I wish you a happy healthy 9 months!

There is a condition called Superfetation.
Superfetation is claimed to be common in some species of animals, but is extremely rare in humans. It can occur only where there are two uteri, or where the menstrual cycle continues through pregnancy.
You should read about this and don`t hurry with the D&C. Maybe this baby is from another pregnancy wich happened latter while you were pregnant. You better know if you had sex with your husband and when. The interval betwen both fetuses is 5 weeks. The last one wich is 5 weeks size it`s seems normal to me.
These condition is very rare but miracles are around us.
You should post these to the expert forum if you want an answer from dr Keith.
Please dont hurry with the D&C. You should realize this like a blessing from God.

I personally don't believe a word of this story. A five week old pregnancy does not show a moving fetus on an ultrasound.

"They did an ultrasound and found what may be some dead tissue or a very shrunken fetus still in there, so they scheduled me for a d&c on wednesday."

An 8-week sized baby in utero is the size of a grain of rice. So either the poster has time on her hands, or doesn't have her information correct.

Its possible that while they thought you were going to miscarry that your cervix had opened back up and you got pregnant again. Only this baby was hiding behind the other larger unviable baby. I would say dont get the D&C wait as long as possible get as many ultrasounds as you can..... This baby can very well be healthy and strong. If the baby you lost was larger and never had a heartbeat it would NOT shrink and then its heartbeat start again.... What you have is a miracle a blessing all its own.... Thank God and pray.. I think you should relax as much as possible and DONT get the D&C or take any meds other than your prenatal vitamins and plenty of water! Just be cautious and keep an eye on this baby and please make them keep checking by ultrasound if they put you under high risk you can get as many ultrasounds as you need to be certain this baby is healthy...... please please keep an eye on this baby. I truely believe its not the same baby and you will be doing something horrible if you dont wait!!!! God Bless you and your baby!

wow that sonds like a emotional roller coster.  Are you sure that the baby you are seeing now isn't from another pregnancy that happened later.  Have you and your husband had sex since you found out you were pregnant?  It just sounds weird that it could have shrunk to be only 5 week size after so long? I wish you all the luck and hope everything turns out ok.  Don't do anything you are not comfortable doing and make sure all your decisions are right for you.
