What to take for a toothache when pregnant?

For any of you that have had toothaches when pregnant, what were you allowed to take.  I have a really bad toothache that I think is a result of grinding my teeth at night and I am in severe pain.  I left a message with my Dr. but he hasn't called back yet.  Any suggestions?

I've been given hydrocodone and tylenol 3 during pregnancy when I've had wisdom teeth cut out.  OTC meds would just be tylenol.

Tylenol for pain.......A little hint I learned when I was a kid:

Take a Tylenol and crunch it up into powder and put it on the tooth......It's nasty, but it will give you instant relief and you can also use Orjel........

oh and I forgot, some drug stores carry these little "packets" that contain cloves...you put that against the gum under the tooth that's hurting.  If you can't find those you can get crushed cloves usually with the spices and make one yourself.

I used to get HORRIBLE toothaches as a teenager...I mean HORRIBLE...NOTHING helped...but my mom had a trick.  I wouldn't necessarily recommend this while pregnant though.  She used to give me jsut a very small amount of Jack Daniels whiskey...I had to hold it in my mouth around the area where the toothache was...hold it there as long as i could til it burned and my eyes watered and then spit it out.  But I tell you what, it would numb up some toothaches that prescription pain meds couldn't touch.

Thanks for the suggestions. This pain is excruciating and the dentist said there isn't much he can do.  I tried orajel, which helps for about 5 minutes, and one 500mg tylenol which gives me relief for about an hour but that is it.  I honestly feel like ripping this tooth out of my mouth with pliers (lol) that is how much pain I feel at the moment.

I can sympathize with you.  My teeth caused me so many problems that I had to have them ALL yanked out when I was 19.  I had toothaches so bad that I couldn't cry but that's all i wanted to do, i couldn't stand, sit, walk, talk...I'd rather go through natural child birth again that deal with those toothaches I used to get.  Maybe a combination of pain meds and a topical anesthetic might help.  There is this stuff called benzocaine that my dentist gave me it's a topical anesthetic gel taht they use in the office....works pretty good...might ask about that.
