When did you introduce a sippy cup?

Jeremiah is almost 11 months now, and I was wondering, when do you introduce a sippy cup? Should I start soon or wait? And if I wait, how long? I have no clue when to introduce it as he is not nursing as much anymore and still just takes a bottle with either water, juice, or rice milk. I just thought about this today and I can't believe I have no clue! lol. Thanks for any advice. =)

Thank you ladies!! I didn't have time run out yesterday, but I think I am going to get a sippy cup sometime today (so long as I feel well) and also teach him to drink out a cup. We try to do it now and he is not too bad...it spills sometimes, but he is learning! That is a really good idea though, in case I forgot his cup somewhere. Jeremiah gets juice and water. If he has a 4oz bottle, I put 3oz of water and 1oz of juice....I never do straight juice...I actually can't even drink juice straight anymore. I think it's too sugary. When are they usually able to hold a cup on their own? Like when could you trust your child not to spill the cup or play around? Obviously right now, if Jeremiah sees my glass on the coffee table he gets to it, and wants to just knock it over. lol. I know they will always have accidents for a while with spilling, but when does their coordination pick up with that? Thanks again!!! Great advice as always. =)

alaysha is right.  the one drawback to skipping sippy cups is that they cant crawl around with them.  But the positive is that there are glasses everywhere!  so if you are in restaurant or at friends or anywhere, you dont have to worry about if you brought the sippy cup or not....one less thing to tote around with you :)

Daughter did also have some plastic cups with lids and straws that we got from Babies R Us that we used for travel situations...but my husband wanted those to be limited.

PS.  Daughter was breastfed until she was 16 months old.  Up until the time she turned 1, whenever I couldnt nurse, she drank breast milk out of a bottle.  When she drank out of a glass, it was water.

When she turned 1, we introduced cow milk, which she also drank out of a glass.

I knew too many mothers whose babies just wanted juice once they had a taste - forget water - so we never gave her juice at all until recently....and only when we are out of the house.  At home she only gets milk and water.

I moved Aspen completely off the bottle by 12 months and I use the playtex sippy cups. I've heard that nubi are good as transition cups but they have a weird habit of leaking (or at least the ones I've used have). The playtex ones have a valve in them that makes it so that your baby has to suck to get liquid out which means no spills on the carpet if it gets knocked over.

Also, I agree with pookie if you give them a glass full of water or juice or whatever they are able to drink out of it themselves. Takes a little practice but they are capable. Only problem with that is they cant crawl around with an open glass and it will most likely spill. Its a good thing to teach them though so if your out in public and lose your sippy cup you can just have him drink out of your glass.

I would maybe call to check, it might be a tad too early. I would hate for the milk to upset his tummy.

my dd (my first) I gave at 7 or 8 months and had her completely off the bottle by 12 months...  my ds (now 14 months, almost) still mostly uses a bottle-  I try giving him a sippy cup, and he drinks out of it, but he doesn't like it, and so I get lazy and just give him a bottle...  at some point I suppose I'll have to bit the bullet and just have him be a grump for a week or so...

We never did sippy cups.

When my daughter turned 6 months old I went to a nutritionist about introducing baby foods and making my own. She also said that kids can go straight to glasses....and best is to make glass full to rim (natural instinct is to give them little water in glass as possible, but then they have to tilt head back too far so that doesnt work!) and let her slurp water out.

It worked perfectly!  She learned to drink out of a glass very early and we skipped sippy cups completely.

He will be a year old in exactly 6 weeks. (VERY hard for me to believe!!)
Maybe I should just call his doc to double check?

When does he turn 1? Noah had his one year check up a week before his birthday and his ped said I could start him on milk. As long as he is pretty close to turning 1 I think he should be fine trying milk since I don't think anything magically changes in their body the day they turn 1 :)

That's really cheap for the Nuby cups! I live 2 min. from a walmart, so that's perfect. Can I start introducing whole milk even though he is not quite a year yet? I really want to start to wean him completely in the next few months here. He honestly only nurses in the morning and evening now. (sometimes in the afternoon for his nap) But he is not getting nearly enough to satisfy him, i think it's just a comfort thing right now. I give him rice milk, but I know whole milk would fill him up better probably. Would that be okay? Thanks again!! =)

I use the Nuby sippy cups. They have a silicone nipple instead of the hard plastic. I buy mine at Walmart for like $1 or so a cup.

So he can definitely start! Start with lunchtime. When you give him his lunch, give him a sippy cup of water to try out! Or a tiny bit (2 ounces) of whole milk.

If you want to start to wean him from breastmilk/bottles then only offer milk in sippy cups and only water in the bottles.

When I worked in day care as a baby room teacher, I had all the babies from 6 months to 1 year and 4 months. ( I'm a nanny now.)   It depends on the child but most start between 7-10 months.  I would say its time to start.  Start by giving him/her juice in the cup.  Once they get that down then you try milk.  They tend to want their milk in a bottle an put up more of a fight for it.  Good luck, Anita

You can get the nuby cups anywhere, target, walmart, walgreens.
The flow on them shouldn't be too fast since they are meant as transition cups. I like playtex sippy cups as well since they are pretty good at not leaking, they have a valve in them that also helps with keeping the flow slower. Some cups have valves in them that have a fast side and a slow side but I am not sure which brand that is since the name on the cup has been washed off over time.

I think I will go out tomorrow and see what I can find then. He still nurses at bedtime, so for now I try to get him switched during the day and see what works.

GRose, you said to try the nuby cups? I have no clue what they are, but I will look for them. Where did you find them?

Another question.....what type or brand of sippy cup do you recommend? I don't want to just buy anything, and also, I think he still has a problem with the faster nipples as he chokes a lot, so is there a cup you can control the flow with?

Thanks again ladies!!! =)

My ped also wanted Noah off of bottles by 12 months, I lied to her and said he was cause I didn't want to hear it lmao. He finally was  completely off bottles at bed time by the time he was 2, his daddy wanted to keep him a baby as long as possible lol.

I think you should start trying now. Have you seen those nuby cups? They are really good transition cups since the spout is soft like a nipple.

I started at around 7-8 months, but she didnt like them at first. Took me till she was about 13 months to get her completely off bottles. They usually want them off bottles by 12 months.

i gave Dylan a cup at 6 months....and he threw is bottle in the trash at 10 1/2 months .............he loved the cup, between 8-10 months i could only get him to take his bottle at nap times and bedtimes (just twice a day)......any age after they start eating more solid foods is a good time to introduce the cup!!!!
