here's a scenario as an exampled:

You took a HPT with first morning urine.  The test was sensitive to 25 miU:  becuase you used first morning urine the HCG level was more highly concentrated therefore easier to pick up

You took the doctors test using second or third urine of the day.  The doctors test strips are only sensitive to 35 miU.  Because you had already urinated, plus most likely drank something, the concentration of HCG in your system has been diluted.

This is just an exampled of how it's very easily possible to have a positive then negative test.  Even different home pregnancy tests have different sensitivities.

Blood tests aren't always going to clear things up as they can be less sensitive than the urine tests as well.  It depends on what the particular labs range of pregnant and non-pregnant values are.  Some labs may consider anything over 25 as pregnant while other labs may say anything over 20 is pregnant.  If you are very early in pregnancy the HCG levels may be low enough that you ARE pregnant but not they don't register pregnant on the tests.

Most pregnancy blood tests are qualitative, meaning they only check a yes or no for pregnancy.  A quantitative or Beta HCG will test the AMOUNT of HCg in the blood.  The beta HCG can be repeated in 48 hours time to see if the HCG is doubling.  If it is then it's a great indicator of pregnancy and viability of the pregnancy.

Good luck I hope you both get some clarity soon!!!
