YOU MIGHT BE A FIRST TIME MOM IF ...

Hey Ladies,

I thought it might be fun for those of us that already have kids to leave some notes/advice for the new mommies and mommies-to-be about the things we did with our first baby that we can't imagine ever doing again!!!  Looking forward to learning from others, too!!!

Here's my first contribution:

You might be a first-time mom if you wake up your baby in the middle of the night so he/she doesn't miss a feeding.  They won't starve to death --get your sleep while you can!!!

I saw this in a movie and I will use it because I know that some women have done it and its okay to do it.

You might be a first time mom if you wake your baby up in the middle of the night just to make sure they're still breathing.

The movie was Terms of Endearment. Her daughter was a newborn and it just shows her in the room late at night looking into the crib. She's like "She's not breathing" and you hear "yes she is" "I don't think she is!" And she touches the baby and the baby gives a little cry and she walks out of the room. lol

On Sneezing (to add to joy's): You might be a first time mom if you freak out when your baby sneezes and milk comes out his or her nose!!! (mine has done this several times.)

Oh... I have a bassinet and use it every night.. well... (and this is bad i know..) when he's not in bed with us 1/2 the night!  lol in the next two days we're gonna put him in his crib in the nursery to see how he does!

and as for nursing pads... I never needed them.  my milk didn't flow that fast and I dried up within a month.

Oh.... NEW ONE!: you know your a new mom if you have like 5 different kinds of bottle nipples in the cupboard and only use 1!!! (I literally have a ton! playex, soothie, and tons of others. My son only takes the blue soothie ones! from the hospital

I'm sorry you are having trouble, I cant imagine how it would feel to try for a baby for so long and then have someone rub their pregnancy in your face.

I have heard that a lot, that having 2 is easier than 1

Yeah, my SIL just found out she was pregnant a few months ago. But it's different for me. I'm not a negative person or anything but I felt really bummed out because we have been trying for so long and they got pregnant right away. She wasn't exactly nice about it either. So I don't really want to be pregnant with her (I was pregnant with my other two when she was with her two!). That makes me sound like such an awful person but I'm just trying to be real. I'm happy to have a new niece or nephew, obviously! Just irritated with the attitude that I feel I'm getting.

Anywho, I hope you get pregnant fast! Baby number 2 is soooooo much fun. I actually think it's easier with 2.

I think part of what is giving me the baby fever is that my sister and one of my best friends are both preggers. I love being pregnant so much and I love babies even more. After getting those 3 positive tests I realized how ready I am for another. We are going to start trying, I have been off bc for 2 1/2 months now so hopefully it will happen soon.

Don't worry I get sore very easily from working out, you're not pathetic.

We tried for a year for #3 and we just stopped trying this cycle. I'm working on exercising and getting back on track. In one week I was only able to workout TWICE because I over-did it both times. My legs hurt sooooo bad for FOUR days. I couldn't even walk up the stairs or put weight on them. How pathetic is that?! So I'm definitely trying to get back on track.

But I definitely have baby fever. I haven't been getting on here very often lately because it makes me feel sad. Hopefully I'll be announcing a pregnancy sometime before the year is out!

I know, I was holding my cousins newborn today at a family get together and I was TOTALLY getting baby fever. I think everyone could tell cause they kept making comments about how into babies I am.

Ha ha! GRose, I just read your comment above mine and I had to laugh. I think it's happened to us all, except some husbands like it. I would fall asleep nursing my babies and wake up with a huge ring of milk on the sheets and a sleeping infant with a crusty milk trail down her cheek!

Awwwwwwww... I miss having newborns!

I know, my son is 21 months and we use the changing table everyday.
Shortly after having my son I put DB's shoe in the fridge, tortilla chips in the freezer and put a plastic bowl on the hot stove burner. I swear being prego/new mom just makes women out right ditsy.

*pout* I use my changing table! I still use it and my youngest is 18 months old.

*AHEM* Anyway, you know you're a first time mom when you put the milk in the cupboard and the bread in the fridge. But then again, that may happen when the 2nd, 3rd, 4th baby...

You'll also know you're a first-time mom when you panic if your baby so much as sneezes or feels warm. Take it easy! Newborns sneeze to clear their nose of dust so they can breathe better because they don't naturally breathe through their mouths until about 3-6 months old.

I didnt get to read them all but I am a first time mom and I LOVE my changing table. how weird is it that Julian can be screaming bloody murder then I put him on it and he smiles and is content! Haha!!! I attribute it to the fact that it is in front of a window and he likes the light!

You might be a first time Mom if you spend hours registering for EVERYTHING that is on the BABIES R US registry and you dont get half of it and you go back and buy everything else. The reason you didnt get it is because all the other Moms that came to your baby shower bought it and never used it!!!! I did it ! I am so Guilty of it too!

You might be a first time mom if your shocked to discover your be bed is soaked with breastmilk the first time you and hubby decided to have sex after your baby is born.

Your husband might be a first time dad if he thinks its funny to call you momma moo-cow in the first few weeks

(I tried so hard not to laugh during it because I swore to my husband that if he ended up laughing I would not ever have sex with him again.)

I always use my changing table. Babies have explosive poo sometimes that runs out their diapers and they wriggle around sometimes making for a messy situation. Plus,
I think that a changing table is a back saver, you're not hunched over on the floor or bed changing a diaper.
You might be a first time Mom if you think that cloth nursing pads are going to keep the milk from leaking through your bra. I thought those would work and had a soaked shirt when I was out and about one day, thank God I always carried an extra shirt in the diaper bag.
Beware of other babies too, if they start crying while you are still lactating you can be sure that the milk is going to start flowing. One day my sister was trying on bras in the target fitting room and a baby started crying, her milk started pouring out like a faucet. She was in the middle of changing and wasn't wearing a bra so she had to stand there hunched over just letting the milk pour out for about 5 min.

oh and I got some good laughs in too =)

I hope more people post on this thread i loved reading what everyone has to say and all the advice. Im definitely gonna listen to what a bunch of you had to say..and about the clothes with snaps, i never thought of that before but it  makes total sense they would be kinda annoying. Thanks again and keep posting!!!

I also used the changing table a LOT!

I agree with a lot of the others...

2nd hand clothing, etc...I WILL be thrifty the next time around!

Buying TOO much clothing!  I'm still guilty of this, although I'm trying to limit her seasonal wardrobes.  LOL!  :)

Overpacking the diaper bad...like the world is going to end and we have to have every possible thing to survive for a year in it!

Here's my new one...
Being paranoid to leave the baby with CAPABLE babysitters.  "No one can do it the same as mommy" type attitude cost me a lot of baby-free nights!

I'm sure I can think of more later...my 2.5 year old "baby" just woke up!  :)

You might be a first time mom if going to the shop with new baby looks like you are going on holiday for a week.  Baby nappy bag - packed with extra clothes, socks, nappies, wipes, changing mat, extra blankets - everything for in case something might get dirty. Ext, Ext Ext.

We did it with our first - had a bag full of "in case things may happen" - and that's not even the bottles - was breastfeeding.

With nr 2 quickly learned nappies and wet wipes most important extra clothes can stay in the car - if ever needed.

Your a first time mom, if you get your first date night after baby is home and all you do is sleep thru the movie!
I actually did that one!!! lol.

Also. ladies, if your milk dries up be sure not to blame yourself... sometimes it happens. I made it  1 month  and 1 day. that day my milk dried up almost completely, I'm proud of how far I made it! esp. if it's a special case or your baby is preemie or sick.. sometimes stress will cause it!
