advice on possible blighted ovum

i found out i was pregnant on april 14, 2011.at my first dr apt i was almost 6 weeks pregnant according to lmp and the u/s tech saw a gestational sac but nothing else. no yolk sac or baby so i was scheduled another apt for today (a week later). i am 7 weeks and 5 days and once again, there was a g-sac but no yolk sac or baby. we thought blighted ovum at first but the midwife is unsure because my g-sac grew from 12mm to 21mm in just 8 days. she doesnt know whats making the sac grow if theres no baby. i got bloodwork done today to check my hcg levels and i have to go again in 3 days to see if theyre getting higher or not. im praying they are sky rocketing. lol
i havent had any morning sickness with this pregnancy but i have had cravings and ive been pretty tired and been having trouble sleeping at night, along with extrememly sore breasts. which i thought was a good sign. i havent had any cramping or spotting at all. i havent bled a drop since my period march 11. im really nervous because i dont want to lose my baby. we were all starting to get really excited. im almost 8 weeks and by the time i go to my next ultrasound ill be 8wks5days. im getting into my third month and would be devested to loose it. this is my first pregnancy and im only 21 years old. does anyone have any advice on any of this? it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, I really hope all works out well and that the little one is just hiding really well.  I know how hard the waiting can be and hope it all goes quickly for you.

I too had a similar situation inbetween my first two children.  I had a scan and only the sac was seen and after lots of blood tests my numbers were still going up but not doubling as they should.  Doc kept checking for a few weeks (which was a very long and emotional time) but all that happened is that the sac grew but not any baby.  Doc explained that sometimes the hormones can still cause all the symptoms (I was feeling very pregnant) and cause the sac to continue to grow when there is no baby.  Sac will slow down and mc will occur as the placenta is suppose to take over.  This happened to me around 10 weeks.  It was a very long and drawn out mc and made very hard as i always had a bit of hope in the back of my mind that they had made a mistake.  Also bad as i had all the bad parts like morning sickness and tirdness etc but none of the good - baby.  I really hope this is not your situation but just thought i would share with you as a possible explanation - thinking of you and good luck.

i went to the dr yesterday because my stomach was hurting but according to the dr it wasnt a place it would hurt due to miscarriage but we went ahead and got my levels and did another ultrasound and theres no baby. they've officially diagnosed it blighted ovum. :( my levels went from 56000 to 47000 in 3 days so im scheduled for a d&c thursday. thanks for all the support nun-the-less.

thanks for the kind and encouraging words it helps alot. my boyfriend and i have already decided ahead of time, just incase, that if it is infact a blighted ovum, i want to miscarriage naturally. i dont feel like getting a forced miscarraige because then id constantly wonder if there was ever really any other chances for my baby to be seen later on. im not positive on the day that i concieved because i wasnt really tracking ovulation or any of that. we werent really trying to get pregnant at the time, it just happened. but no matter the circumstances we were both really excited about it. all i know for sure is the day my last period began, which was march 11, 2011. (oddly enough while i was at the hospital waiting for my cousin to give birth!! lol) ive been going by that date ever since and my dr confirmed that it was correct, which would put me at 8 weeks tomorrow. im really praying its not a blighted ovum! i read a story online of a woman who the drs were positive it was a blighted ovum and she wanted to miscarry naturally so the dr was monitaring her weekly and when she went in at 9 weeks she saw her baby with a strong heartbeat and all and now has a healthy little girl running around all over the place. i can only hope my story goes a little like hers. i go get my levels tested on saturday but i dont get the results until after my ultrasound on wednesday afternoon. :( so ive got to wait a bit longer to find everything out.how do you know if your womb is tilted? is that normally a test that drs do to find out or what? im new to all of this but i really hate waiting around to get answers from my doctors. once again thanks for all the kind wishes!

I had a blighted ovum last year, and I can tell you that the sac does continue to grow, baby or not.  It's not going to hurt you to let it grow a little bit more just to be sure that there is nothing inside.  Typically at 7 weeks, you should at least see a yolk sac and the beginning of a fetal pole inside the gestational sac - but not everyone does.  Don't go strictly off your numbers, mine were doubling perfectly - and by 9 weeks there was still nothing there and it was in the wrong spot so we decided to go ahead with the MTX shot.  I am hoping for the best for you!

i guess you may find out in 3 days time if your numbers have doubled. its a bit early to diagnose blighted ovum. if you have a tilted womb it may be harder to see baby. i had the same thing at 6 weeks but by 8 weeks we saw baby with a heart beat. if you are a few days out in regards to ovulation it could be the reason that baby is a little smaller. i am not sure what size the gestational sac should be when you first see a baby inside but good luck and let me know how it goes in 3 days time! if your numbers have not doubled, chances are it is a blighted ovum but stranger things have happened and you may turn out fine, even with lower numbers :) try not to worry. its a waiting game for the next week or 2 to see if anyone shows up in the sac or not. good luck
