Oh cool- I'll have to go on that site and watch it then!

I also unnecessarily had Pitocin with my first two births. There was no reason for me to have it as I was progressing on my own. I don't understand why OBs want to speed the process up so quickly. It wasn't like I was there in the middle of the night! It was broad daylight.

I couldn't breathe through contractions with my first either which is why I got the epidural and thus the Pitocin as well. So I went from not knowing how to control and manage my pain to having a natural birth with my third baby. It IS possible girl! Knowledge is power.

I had to focus on each contraction as they came. Fear makes them more intense and when you feel like you cannot breathe you get fearful thus intensifying the contractions. It is so incredibly painful but by focusing on each one as they came and breathing through them I was able to manage it. When you start going, "When will this end?" and start freaking about how many more there'll be is when things can get out of control as well.

Because I was able to do this and focus on them one-at-a-time and as they came my labor felt like it flew by. It seriously felt like only 1-2 hours, if that, to me. You kind of get in this zone and you shut out everyone. I distinctly remember my husband asking me questions and I would ignore him just so I could concentrate (I warned him beforehand that that might happen and to just stay by me but leave me alone, ha ha).

If you go to my blog you can find a ton of medical blogs that are all L&D/pregnancy related on the right-hand sidebar under "Medical Blogs". I have to PM you the address as I do not believe I'm allowed to post it here. Nursing Birth was one of my faves. She has a ton of wonderful Top 10 lists for labor.

P.S. I didn't tear either. Healing happened quickly. I was free to leave early but decided to stay the full 2 days. In retrospect I wish I would've left early. It was dreadful being at the hospital and uncomfortable!

I have not seen the DVD... yet! They also have a book out now. They're in my Amazon wishlist, ha ha!

I gave birth to my first two daughters in the standard way- hooked up to everything: catheter, IVs, fetal monitoring, epidural, etc. I stayed in bed the entire time. Couldn't eat or drink anything. Was told to lay there and not move or the monitors would mess up. Never encouraged to do anything to help my labor progress naturally. Felt like I was just a number and a chart that had to be filled out.

So I wanted to do things differently with Zoë and I mean DRASTICALLY different. I did so much research and part of that research was finding out about this DVD. I just never go around to buying it. Instead I followed blogs of L&D nurses, midwives and birth activists who promote natural birth.

I cannot tell you how much I've learned, some scary stuff. Not all hospitalized births with an OB are bad! It just depends on the OB and how proactive they are with their patients needs and desires.

At 37 weeks pregnant I made the switch from my OB to a midwife group because I was very unsettled with my OB. I felt I was going to end up with the same birth story- laying in bed hooked up to everything as though I was an ill or dying patient instead of a powerful woman who was capable of delivering her baby.

People, birth is raw and real! There is nothing wrong with wanting pain management. There is nothing wrong with going in and having birth done your way. The point is that it should be what you WANT and not thrust upon you with little or no informed consent. You should never feel pressure to do something against your will.

So how did my third birth look?

I was in a hospital with a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) as homebirth wasn't something my hubby was comfortable with. I was free to eat and drink. I was free to get up and move around; encouraged even! Though I ended up getting in the tub and laying on my side in bed because of severe round ligament pain (I think I tore a ligament so it was hard to move).

No IV.
Only a little fetal monitoring when we first arrived per hospital's rules. Then I was off the monitors.
Only checked my blood pressure when I first arrived so no cuff on me constantly.
No epidural.
No catheter.

I was free to push in whatever position I wanted, which ended up being side-lying though I would've preferred squatting over the back of the bed. Didn't happen because of the ligament issue- I just couldn't get up.

I was also free to push at my own discretion. No one was in my face telling me when to push or how to push or for how long. When I felt the urge to push I pushed! Baby was out in less than a minute!!! That doesn't happen for everyone but dang. It hurt!

It ended up that the only medical personnel in the room was the midwife! One nurse had gone down the hall to grab something and the other didn't answer her page in time. So it was just the lone midwife catching my baby! I was happy about that later because I didn't want a ton of people watching me.

Phew, that was long! But I'm very passionate about women figuring out what birth they want and fighting for it*!  (***Provided that she has a low-risk pregnancy and is under the care of a medical professional of her choosing!)
