Same here. But my doctor told me its okay as long as cat is indoor. Just to be safe, I wear mask and gloves when I change it out. Also instead of using that scooper, I got the baby shovel and use it to scoop out the entire area my cat pooped or pee.
I work at a vets office and my doctor did a toxicity test when I found out I was pregnant to check and make sure that the cat little boxes I cleaned before knowing had caused any problems. . . I say talk to your doctor if you have nobody else to help you out. If all else fails the doctor can give you tips on how to clean it safely.
You should be okay as long as you wear a mask over your nose and mouth. Also wear some gloves and after you are done wash your hands just to be extra safe.
Yes the main way cats get toxoplasmosis is by being an outdoor cat and getting it through other animals, but they can still get it if they are indoor cats and you give them either milk or deli meats. Both of those carry the same bacteria. Overall just be careful :)
The reason why its dangerous to change cat liter is because the cats fesces and urine can carry toxoplasmosis. But your cat only carries that disease if it ate a bird that ate a rat. Rats are the main carriers for the disease and pass it to the birds and than the cats eat thw birds. So if your cat is only a inside cat you could be ok but i would still wear gloves and a mask. And if you ever had the disease you can't get it again. But you should talk to your doctor about it and have your husband in the room
Toxoplasmosis can only be carried by cats that go outside. They get it from birds and other animals outside. It is excreted through your cats pee and poop. Take precautions and talk to your doctor they will know better than anyone else on here
I agree with Lexi. There's a reason why doctors tell you not too. Just like alcohol. Some women drink it and their babies still come out extremely healthy. But it's a risk regardless.
No its fine. If your cat is a house cat then you have nothing to worry about. But if your cat goes outside then you have something to worry about.
Do not change that liter box! I told my boyfriend if he wasn't willing to change it while I'm pregnant then we won't have a cat. There's no reason to risk such a huge risk with your baby for a cat (in my opinion). Also I'm glad some people have had healthy babies even though they changed the litter box during their pregnancies :) however don't let this help you make your decision in cleaning net litter box because signs of toxoplasmosis can develop over a period of time and might not be noticeable at birth
If you must change it I would recommend gloves and a mask and also if you go to dollerama they have cheap prefilled litter pans I used those when my roommates refused to change it for me and just threw the whole thing out. It was about $2 per pan
I didn't wear a mask and like Isaid gave birth to a pperfectly healthy baby 10 days ago, I trust doctors opinions... Maybe just talk to your doctor about it
I clean my cats litter box with all my kids.. I try not to breath it in and i wore gloves.
^^^ not don't tell her that lol. She's not supposed to be changing it at ALL. But the cat is fine. That's not the problem. The problem is the pee and ammonia in the poo. If you use a mask like dentists use and gloves. Or just cover your mouth and nose with a plastic bag. (Don't suffocate) and clean it. Then you're fine. Otherwise you'll have to send the cat out. Eventually I did. I always refused to take my cat out but it became a hassle to be taking extra caution.
Yes I have 2 cats changed it throughout my whole pregnancy and gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl. My doctor said its really only dangerous if your cats go outside
I rhink as long as u clean it every day and try to get all the stuff out and change littler every 3 to 5 days u would b ok
