I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through. But I do have some information that might answer a few of your questions. What you are explaining is called a "blighted ovum." This is when a sac if formed but no embryo or yolk sac is present. Your HcG levels will rise but most of the time very slowly. What has your doc said the next step is that you will take?
There are two ways to best figure out what is going on. 1. Do an ultrasound in about 1 wk to 10 days. If there isn't sufficient growth then it could result in a m/c. 2. Draw blood to measure hcg levels, then again 48 hrs later. If the levels double then that shows things are progressing if they drop it shows a result will be m/c.
It is possible that the baby could eventually show up. There are many times that a blighted ovum is misdiagnosed. If you have a tilted uterus then the baby might be hidden and won't show until around maybe 12wks. And sometimes babies just take longer to appear so it is very, very possible that this is turn out completely fine! So make sure that you are comfortable with what is going on and that you I evidence of what is going on either way.
I wish you much luck. I am currently going thru a m/c because my baby just stopped growing at 6wks5days. I found this out at my 13wk ultrasound. So I know what you are feeling right now.
Don't worry yourself to much! I had the same issue with my last pregnancy and this pregnancy as well. Doctors fail to tell pregnant women that ultrasounds can sometimes NOT pick up a fetal pole or baby that early. I had an ultrasound at 4 weeks and another one at 6 weeks and still no fetal pole....I haven't had any other ultrasounds to verify, however I had my first OB appointment at about 13 weeks and we found a strong fetal heart beat on the doppler machine, so I know there is a baby in there.
I think doctors do this to just cover their "assets" so that they don't make any mistakes and miss a possible risk. However, the other part of me feels like they over exaggerate over this happening to make mothers come in for repeat tests, so that the doctors can collect more money from insurance companies.
But I wouldn't stress out to bad. I'm sure everything is perfectly fine, and that a repeat ultrasound around 8-12 weeks will show a baby!
The best way to date a pregnancy is by measuring the crown/rump length of the fetus/fetal pole. The imagers can try to date based on gestational sac size, but it's not the best. Sometimes the fetal pole doesn't show til week 7 or 8 or even as late as week 12, but that is rare. If you go back in a week or 2, they should be able to give better dates based on yolk sac size or CRL of fetal pole. Try not to worry, it's common to not see much this early in the game. Good Luck with the "dating game" :-)
