My aunt and uncle had a dog since they first started dating. They have now been together foe almost 10 years. The dog was like they're baby because thwy disnt have one. They added another one and of course treated this one the same way. A year or so later the had a baby and they're dogs are juat as protective over him as they were of them. Of course the dogs lost priority but they have never bitten him or even snapped at him at far as I know.

I already have the crib set up in my room and the swing and shelves with baby clothes on them. .. I let him and then but I don't let him get overly Curious. ..... I can't bring my self to start making him not sleep in my room yet ..but an going to when the baby first comes home ..... sometimes he sleeps with his head on my stomach. ..... I just hope he will like the baby because I don't want to keep him away from the baby forever

Ur dog will probably adjust to the baby quickly. Most likely it will be his new best friend and will protect the new baby with his life. Dogs are amazingly smart animals and can surprise u with their love and actions

My pup is like my child as well and I have also been so worried how he is going to react to a baby being around since he is my baby. I am currently 28 weeks and have been preparing my pup since about week 20. I talked to my vet. Now I am a little on the extreme with my pup. He really is like my child. I have had him since the day he was born. He was the runt and the mom tried to eat him. So he was needle feed by me. So I have a bond with my dog. So here is what I have done to try and prepare him for not being the center of my attention anymore. People laugh at me because he is my kid. Just with four legs. Some told me to get rid of him which for me isn't an option. I set up the crib so he gets used to it. I also set out the car seat every day in different places. He doesn't like it at all but he is getting used to it being around. I have also set up what I call a no baby zone. Which is a place where he can go where there will be no baby. So he has his space. I realize I sound like a weirdo but my dog is special to me. Also make sure that you have the dogs food in a place the baby can't go once the baby is old enough. We have already moved my pups bowl to a new spot so he gets used to it. Also have a blanket and a onesie that you know may get torn up or dirty. Take that to the hospital. Have the baby in it for a few hour then take it home so the pup can smell it and know the smell. Also let the pup be around your stomach. Mine is very small and has stated to lay on my stomach and gets kicked so he knows something is in there. Lol. My vet also told me that make sure you do start to ignore the dog a bit more then normal so it isn't a shock to the dog when you can't always pay attention to them once baby is here. Also when I come home my father is going to bring the baby inside for me So I can pay attention to my pup first then show him the baby. The other fhing I was told is to still play with dog with baby around so they do not see the baby as a threat and know they share you now. One last thing the vet told me. Be prepared for something's to be torn up. Remember a dog is like a 3year old they are going to show they are mad. I am nervous about the jealous with my daughter and my pup but I am doing everything to get him ready for her to be around. I wish you luck and hope that your pup bonds and is best friends with your little one. Hope my advice helps dear.

Yeah I've got a miniature wiener and they are widely known for not being good with toddlers and such, my dog has never snapped at or bitten any little kids that come up to pet her but she gets tense and always barks when they get too close to me or around the front door, she's always been that way lol I'll be bringing an outfit and blanket home with my mom before we leave the hospital so she can get used to her smell. Just watch your dog closely and don't let him get too close unless you're holding baby and can quickly take baby away if dog gets too stressed out

My dog was the same way before I brought home my daughter. He growled at any little kid. When I brought her home he left whatever room we had the baby in. After a month he became curious. He would come and sniff her and sit at our feet. It took time but he came around. Two years later the two of them are inseparable :)

The dog is just protecting you since it knows that your pregnant. My moms dogs they just want to sniff me none stop. They lick my toes and my belly. My mom tries to pull them away but they pull away and always come back to lick my toes. I think its weird. Maybe her dogs have an obsession for toes.

I had brought the baby swing into the living room,  & my dog doesn't seem to mind it. He sniffed it a couple times.  Every time,  I'm working in the nursery...i encourage my dog to come in there with me and he sniffs like everything twice.  I also plan on doing what Liz_Zoey said.

A good thing to do is to get a blanket and wrap the baby in the blanket while still in the hospital. One you don't really care about. Then when you get home, give that blanket to the dog, so the dog can learn babys scent and will know baby is supposed to be there. The dog may even become protective of the baby faster that way. Idk about a cat though..

I have a cat that's the same way. Anytime a kid comes near her, she hisses. I'm worried for when the baby comes too. What I'm hoping is that since they'll be around baby all day, everyday, they'll get use to them? Kids rarely come over and I think it just freaks my cat out. I'm hoping she gets use to it.
