Her doubt is the fact that she either may think she got prego without ovulating, or that she is trying to get pregnant on a non-ovulating day. Yes sweetie, you must ovulate to get pregnant. That is the day you concieve. You don't necessarily need a period though. Many go months without a cycle and still concieve. It just all depends on your body, and how fertile you are.
