for experienced mommys-please help!

My 2 week old has colic. Its been pretty bad and just started a few days ago. Is gripe water a good option? Also she acts as if she doesn't get enough to eat and I was wondering about puttin a lil infant cereal in her bottle to help fill her up? Any suggestions would be great. I don't know if I can handle my sweet baby crying allllll the time like she has been. I took her to the dr today because she screamed for hoursss straight. He calmed her some, told me to massage her tummy, burp her more often during feedings, and use gas drops before I feed her. I've heard gripe water does wonders so I would love to hear any opinions on it. Thanks!

There is an amazing product that your pharmacist keeps behind the counter, called bio Gaia. It comes in a little brown bottle with a yellow label. It's essentially probiotics for babies and every mommy I know who tried it for their colic ridden babes say it changed their life. I would very, very highly recommend it.

Call your pediatrician for a prescription of levsin. Works wonders! She may also have a little acid reflux along with the colic.

My son has reflux and i have used the rice cereal in his bottles since he was 6 wks old! His dr approved it for that and it did help him get full and he quit fussing and crying so much they do get some colic w the reflux as they have burping issues! So i would ask the dr on it to be sure! I love the gripe water as well it helped my son! it only takes a sm dropper i only did the 1/4 teaspooon and thats all he needed!

Gripe water worked wonders for my kids.(all three)  The gas drops made everything worse and would constipate mine big time!  I wouldnt do the cereal at all.  Good luck.

Thank you mrsreeder2be!

No, sim89, no baby needs water, it's very bad for them unless it's approved by a doctor, infants can die from too much water intake, and every baby is different on what is too much for him/her. Not worth the risk!

Hey there,
That's good you brought her to the doctor. He made some great suggestions and I hope they help.
Gripe water is worth a try, it may work for her. Follow the instructions. I think the doctors suggestion of gas drops is worth a try first though.
I had gripe water, (which is similar to gas drops, its not really water) because my mother bought me some though I said I didn't want any, it sat there cause i never had any cause to use it.
You can try a vibration chair, that helped my son burp. Try different positions for feeding and for burping and for cuddling. It might be she just needs to be more upright.
If you suspect she is still hungry, give her an extra ounce and see if she'll drink it. There is no such thing as over feeding your little one. She may be a little one who likes to snack instead of feast. I know that is tedious but if it helps its worth a shot, right?
My last suggestion is try a different formula or try breastfeeding if you aren't. You shouldn't have dried up yet, if you have then i guess that doesn't work. but try another formula for sure, she might not like lactose. if you are breastfeeding, perhaps you should avoid milk products.
best of luck soothing your little one.

use infacol untill for now as gripe water is for when they atleast 1 month old

dont put ceral in the bottle its not good for the babys stomach yet shes too young

if you are formular feeding i would say to use DR Browns bottles it block the baby from swallowing air ,also cow and gate comfort is good milk for babys with colic also they dont get consipated with it

if you are breat feeding make sure shes lacting proply or express into dr browns bottles

and feed her 2 ounces n burp then feed again

hope this helps

My daughter who is now 9 months had colic really bad. I found the gas drops helped some but not much and they took awhile to work. Her doctor put her on enfimil nutramagen till 6 months. The formula change did wonders as we had no more all night crying. Only down side to that formula is looser stools and it's not covered by wic. She is now on gentalease and will be till 1yr. As for the cereal I would not give her any as it will make the colic worse.

Babies don't need water!! Formula or breastfed. They get everything they need from either their formula or breastmilk.

OP, don't put cereal in the bottle it will only make it worse and babies stomach isn't able to digest it that early. That's why you typically wait till closer to 6 months to start solids. Baby is able to digest and break down food better at that age.
Try what your babies Dr suggested, on top of making things soothing.. from swaddling, rubbing bellies and backs, lavender soaps and lotions, white noises....lullaby few. Etc. I hope that baby doesn't end up with a terrible case of colic.

My eldest had really bad colic and suffered with it until he was 10 months old. I found that infacol worked much better than gripe water. Also regular winding through the feeding helps, every 1-2 ounces. Don't put any baby cereal into the milk as their stomachs are not matured enough to digest it properly and will cause problems. You can get hungry baby milk which fills them up faster. You could also try a different brand of baby milk all together or try experimenting with different bottles and teats. Try a slower flow teat which should help to reduce the amount of wind intake. Good luck!

Im sure under ones are suppposed to have sterilized water if they're on formula because the formula doesn't cover thirst.....its only if they're on breastmilk that they don't need water coz breastmilk covers eryting?x

My son was honestly the worst baby ever. Screamed and cried 24/7 and it got to a point where all i did was cry too. He was very cholicy up to a year old and the pediatrician told us to switch to a soy formula, use lavender scented bath products before bed for the calming effects, and burp every ounce. It worked great. It didn't make it completely stop but definitely helped. Good luck.

Especially if she has colic, I would NOT put cereal in her bottle, it will upset her stomach more. My SIL had a really colicy baby, and she ended up getting a different brand formula that helped her, have you asked her doctor about that? I'm not sure about the gripe water, but I know unless approved by a doctor, any infants under the age of a year shouldn't be drinking any water, so ask him/her first. My SIL found bouncing her, rubbing her belly, and putting her on the dryer while it was running (weird, huh?) helped. Unfortunately sometimes colic is hard to get under control, so I hope you find something that works for you, good luck hun!
