lower back ache = sign of labor?

Hi ladies, I'm a ftm & I'm currently 39w4d. Today I've been experiencing an ache in my lower back that feels like it does during my period, and it kinda goes around to my hips & stomach. It's not intense or anything, but it has gradually gotten worse. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to hurt my back or anything. It's not really timeable because it's pretty constant. I'm wondering if this could possibly be a sign of labor or that labor is near? I've been monitored for contractions before & all it felt like to me was menstrual like cramps. So what do you ladies think?
