If you do get to that point, you are too desperate to give a s.h.i.t about the needle, you just want relief.

No^ you can get pain medicine through your iv, but it only lasts like 45 mins and you can only get it once. I was terrified of the needle and it was literally no big deal. You're too focused on contractions and not moving to even think about it.

They didnt. They just told me when I was having a contraction and when to push. It was pretty easy. I told them I could feel very little pressure, so they kinda helped me the whole time. The epidural is meant to numb you. I've never heard of them waiting to push, that's what it's for.

@ SD_CALI I would say go as long as you can before getting it. I got it at a 4 with my first before they broke my water. With my second, I got it after they broke my water. Contractions get pretty intense once they break it. I made it to a 6 before I couldn't take it anymore. The epidural does not hurt when it's being administered. They numb the spot before they stick you. It felt like a little bee sting to me. If they do it correctly, you should still have some feeling and know when to push. You won't feel pain, just pressure :)

I got it and was totally numb. Pushed for 15 mins and there she was. They don't like to give it passed 8 cm. I was at 4 and so uncomfortable.  It was very hard to sit still while a needle is going into your spine and having contractions at the same time. It really doesn't hurt compared to the horrific contractions. And in about 10 mins I was feeling great.

What would be the best time getting an epidural after 3cm 4 5? I don't want to get to numb and not be able to push. Does the epidural hurt when the needles go up your back,

I wanted natural but after 10 hours I only went from a 3 to a 4 and a half. After the epidural I went from a 5 to a 10 in an hour. Went by so fast after that.

I had both of my babies quick! First pregnancy 4 hours from start to finish and the second was a little under 3.5. I had absolutely no problems with milk production or breastfeeding either.

It didn't slow my progression down any. I still made it to 10cm pretty quick, but it numbed me too much and they had me wait until it wore off before pushing.
