no cheese and sushi during pregancy?

I'm not pregnant yet, but my husband and I are trying. Is it true that you can't eat unpasteurized cheeses (bascially all the good cheeses like brie, gorgonzola, and blue cheese) during pregancy? Same with raw sushi? If this is true, why?!

Oh yeah, you can have cooked cheeses or hard cheeses and sushi that is not raw. Don't want you to get sick or lose your baby!

Thanks, ladies. All this information was really helpful. I'm relieved that I can continue to drink coffee and sushi with tempura seems like a good compromise!

I've eatten sushi while pregnant, no issues but I've tried to eat only sushi that has cooked meats like crab or shrimp or the tempura rolls.  I don't go overboard with the health concerns.

Caffeine you can drink up to 300ml a day which is essentially up to 2 cups of coffe or the equivalent

Cheese, well yes, you can't eat soft cheeses (unless heated) if they are unpasteurized. HOWEVER when yuo go to the cheese isle at the supermarket, they do sell pasteurized Feta cheese, just read the label where it says "Made from pausterized milk"  I'd stay away from the blue cheese unless it is melted on top of a steak YUM.  Brie, only if its cooked too.

Fish, there's some that you should limit the ammount that you eat but unless you eat fish more than 3 times a week I wouldn't be too worried.

I'm probably the worst person to ask BUT read the book "The Panic-free Pregnancy" it talks about all the facts and myths surroundign pregnancy and TTC.

Good luck!!

Hmm.... my doctor said it was ok to eat sushi as long as it was cooked. I know that most sushi places wipe down the counter where they are working after making one kind of sushi. I also heard that in Japan the women constantly eat sushi during pregnancy and are fine. I think that you shouldn't worry if it is cooked or artificial.

I know...I thought I would just change my sushi to something that was steamed and not raw and was VERY disappointed when the doctor said NO!  I'm 23w5d and counting...but forgot, I'm going to try breastfeeding and that means still no sushi once the baby gets here.  There are all kind of sacrafices you make to become a parent and sushi is one of mine.  But, when you are holding that precious baby you forget all about your sacrafices.

As for the caffeine, I drink 1 cup of coffee a week, but usually 2-3 cups of unsweet tea a week.  I dranked way more caffeine while trying though.

I believe 1-2 cups of a caffeinated beverage is ok during pregnancy.

This makes me so sad. I thought I would just have to avoid the fish that had lots of mercury - tuna, swordfish, shark, but I thought I could rely on my salmon sashimi always being there.

Do any of you ladies drink coffee when you're pregnant? Is that okay? Did you drink coffee while you were trying?

Like other posters said...you need to avoid soft cheeses.

As for the sushi, this is the biggest thing that I crave and can't have.  My OB said not to eat any sushi, cooked or not because it is all prepared on the same surface so there is still cross contamination at restuarants.  I never liked the packaged sushi at the grocery store...it wasn't "real".

There are also some fish that you can't eat period during pregnancy. I know swordfish is one of them but I can't remember the others. The reason they tell you not to eat these things are because of the bacteria since it could be harmful to your child. If you crave sushi (and even though I don't think its real sushi) you can have california rolls or anything that has cooked or artificial meat.

You can't have unpasterurized cheese (brie, gorgonzola, bleu cheese, any blue veiny cheese) because of Listeria.  It can cause miscarriage.  You can't have raw seafood because of Toxiplasmosis.

The cheese may contain Listeriosis.  It's very harmful to pregnant women. You can eat hard cheeses but not soft cheese like brie, blue cheeses, goat cheese, unless cooked. this is the same reason why all lunch meat should be heated and cooked before eating.

Raw meat may contain bacteria also that is why they tell you not to eat Sushi.
