please help, fetus to small at 8 week ultrasound

I know there have been many threads similar to this one, but I just wanted to ask it again.
I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child (LMP 21 nov) and I went for first ultrasound yesterday and the baby was not visible on ultrasound - only the gestational sac so they did the vaginal ultrasound and saw the fetus (or is it still embryo?) - and it was 3,5mm big. The gestational sac was good size and shape and the uterus looked good as well. Size of fetus corresponds to 5,5 week long pregnancy - so the doctor said that I probabaly misculculated the dates - the thing is that I am sure of the LMP date and I know when we got pregnant (slow month) so even allowing for longer implatation I should be at least 7 weeks on. They sent me home and told me to come back in 2 weeks time for another ultrasound - is that normal? Shouldn't they do blood testing for HCG to see if its rising? I was told that if the baby stopped growing alltogether they will send me to gynecologist to be examined and given a pill to induce miscarriage.
2 weeks is horribly long and its only been a day and I am very nervous and afraid. I live in the Netherlands (but am not Dutch) and the system here is a bit strange. Pregnancy is followed by midwives and they barely do any testing. I already had problems in last pregnancy - at 8 months baby stoped growing properly and before they could figure out whats wrong I went into labour. The only check up they did so far is ultrasound and I was wondering should I push for HCG blood work or is that not reliable?

Once you can see baby on ultrasound, it's a much better way to monitor your pregnancy rather than BHCG testing. With my third pregnancy , my baby was measuring 1 week small for dates and the gestational sac was measuring 2 weeks small. Baby had a strong heartbeat (160 bpm) so they thought all might be okay. I did end up losing that pregnancy at 10 weeks. BUT, with my fourth pregnancy, the baby measured 1 week behind again and now my daughter is almost 2 months old!!! It's impossible for any doctor to predict what is going to happen, but just try to stay positive, because the added stress doesn't help.
