BTW- all pregnant women go through this. I have a terrible time falling asleep and getting up to pee in the middle of the night doesn't help. Just remind yourself it is your body preparing itself for when you have a newborn waking you up every 2-3 hours!
I wouldn't take any sleeping aids (such as pills). Many of them can cause you to become dependent and there are no studies to show if they negatively affect your unborn baby.
First, give yourself a routine. Don't watch TV right before bed. Instead, 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep, you may want to turn the TV off. Sometimes taking a nice, calm bath (with candles!) with lavender oil can soothe you. A cup of warm milk can keep your tummy nice and full without a ton of calories.
The number one reason people can't fall asleep is because they can't shut their mind off. Write in a journal (your To Do lists, what is bothering you, etc.) as you lay in bed. Maybe read a few pages of a book (even a boring one could work to make you drowsy). Keep your bedroom dim. Ask for a massage.
There are SO MANY things you can do.
diphenhydramine hcl is the safe active ingredient to look for...it is in benadryl and many sleep aids
You can use a pillow. Also, the medication called Unisom is SAFE to take during pregnancy. I am 18w and have to take it every night. I took it with my son TJ as well and he didn't have any problems after being born. My Dr said it's category B so safe to take. :)
You can get it at walmart OR just buy the generic for $4 called Equate Sleep Aid Liquicaps
Get a firm pillow and put it under your knees and lay on your left side (helps circulate blood) I hope this helps!
