splenda and pregnancy????

Hi Ladies,

does anyone know if eating foods made with splenda is safe during pregnancy?  i know you are not supposed to use equal or sweet and low but i did not know if any one had any info on splenda.  only because i love the no-sugar puddings made with splenda and there are so fewer calories in it.

thanks,

leighanne

ok, so i will only consume those every once in a while.  i mine as well go out and get the unhealthly pudding.

the humidity is killing me kazwel.  i can not stand it.  i wish it would just either be regular hot or cool, not thing humid craziness that makes you feel as though you can not breath.

My doctor told me basically what everyone else is saying...not enough research to prove one way or the other and to limit artificially sweetened 'things' to no more than one serving a day IF at all...she really thought better to not have any...and when I was prego, I cut it all out except for every now and then I'd have a yogurt or something that had it in it BUT I was trying to be extra cautious so it wasn't too often, it was usually one of those after the fact things that I realized that it was artificially sweetened!  Do what you feel comfortable with!

Hi,

My Dr said the same thing as Gina's,  As long as it is taken in moderation you should be fine.

How are you dealing with this humid weather??  It's killing me!!  i'm so not looking forward to this week!!

There is no conclusive evidence or studies proving that Splenda has any negative effects on a growing fetus, however its not exactly the best thing to be putting in your body. Before I was Pregnant I drank Crystal Light ALL the time, ate everything with Splenda in it (for fewer calories and sugar purpose) I even put it in my coffee. So when I got Pregnant, I asked my doctor if I could still eat/ingest it. And she said exactly what I read..that there are no studies saying that its bad for the baby, but there's nothing proving otherwise either. But she recommended using sugar anyways because Splenda is obviously a "fake" sugar which is bad for our bodies and can affect us later on in life (health wise). She said if I used it every now and then its fine, but try to stay away from it. So every now and then I eat a Yogurt made with Splenda or a Fudgesicle or something. But since I have a baby growing in me I figure the real sugar is prolly better for him/her than anything thats a substitute.

So I would say in moderation is fine!

I've done some research on this and the concensus on Splenda is that it hasn't been researched enough yet to conclude whether it's officially "safe" or "not safe" - it really hasn't even been on the market very long. So there's really no answer yet. Aspartame has been around longer and is generally considered to be relatively safe during pregnancy when consumed in small/moderate amounts. Saccharin (I think that's spelled wrong) which is what is in Sweet & Low has been shown to cause cancer in lab rats so is considered unsafe during pregnancy. In my opinion, it's really best to keep diet products to a minimum due to the lack of research. After all... if there's ever a time to indulge in the good stuff, now is it! ;)
