You wont be able to book the scan yourself, the midwife will do it at your appointment.  You should get one quite soon though, within 2 weeks as the first scan is usually between 11-13 weeks.

The only way you can get one sooner is to pay for a private scan. The NHS would only do it if you had a problem they needed to check like bleeding or cramping.

From you prof it says u live in plymouth, i googled private ultrasound in plymouth and found a site that does foetal viability scan which is an early scan and its £65 but i dont know how close that is to you. Just google it if its something you are interested in.

The website i found was http://ultrasound devon.com/ (no spaces)

My first appt @ 10 weeks I heard the heartbeat & from there had a routine 18 week ultrasound scheduled.  My ob only schedules ultrasound twice through the entire pregnancy unless theres a problem.   Maybe you should call tomorrow & ask.

Nice to see another Scottish lady here! There aren't many! I'm in the Glasgow area and the new way they do it here is out of hospital too. Only time you go to the hospital for the scan is for your 20 week one as that's the major one.

Everything else is done at the GP clinic where the midwifes are more community led, so you have all your clinic appointments, dating scan etc there with them.

Def differences according to where you live, I'm in Scotland too and my experiences have been different to kitkat! I live in the rural Highlands though, and our midwives are not based in the hospital but work from the GP's surgery so our scans here are done by the hospital. Must depend a lot on your health board...

I'm in Scotland, and here they have a newer system in place where it's more midwife led instead of involving other doctors. At your booking scan (this was the case with me and other women I know too) you sit with the midwife and go through your health history, family history, weight, blood tests, blood pressure etc and then you're given your scan. A technician is there as well as the midwife. Obviously different health trusts do it differently in different places so it's possible you'll get a scan and it's possible that you'll have to book it at your appointment.

If you're in the UK, you will be referred by the midwife for a scan. They dont have the facilities or training to do them. You'll probably have blood taken and your notes given to you to carry to all yout appointments, I was left to fill in most of mine (about family history etc) at home, but maybe thats cos this is my third lol!

Most women get their dating scan at their booking appointment. That first appointment is a very lengthy one and can last about 2 hours with an ultrasound included. They check everything - your weight, blood test, family history everything!

I got my scan during my very first doctor appointment. Maybe your midwife will give you one right away too.

Your midwife will organise a dating scan for you. You are very unlikely to have it done on Wed.
