I know at my local hospital, they will not allow a vaginal delivery with a breech baby...
However, my Mother gave birth to my sister whom was breech vaginally.. That was 41 years ago! =)
Most doctors wont deliver breech babies because of the higher risk factor. At 37 weeks Aspen hadn't turned and I was only given 2 options external version or c-section. I tried EVERYTHING to get her to turn and nothing happened. I ended up opting for the version and it barely hurt at all and I got the immense pleasure of being able to deliver my baby naturally. However, at this point in your pregnancy I wouldn't be too concerned since only like 3% of babies don't turn by 36 weeks.
In school we were told the risks are too high to try and deliver vaginally if breech, because once the shoulders deliver (which are the widest part of the baby) there is a risk that the cervix may try to close - around the baby's neck. Then what would they have to do? Our OB instructors wouldn't even talk about what they might have to do then... but that it would be such a major emergency with a doubtful outcome for both mom and baby at that point.
Delivering a breech baby is possible- but most hospitals refuse to do so. If you have a doctor that will do it, then great! Otherwise you can always ask to have baby manually turned.
my mom delivered both me and my younger brother breech and vaginally. and back then they didnt have epidurals. We were her 2nd and 3rd babies so I wonder if they would have let her try if it was her first. She begged for a c-section on my little brother and they wouldnt do it, (my how things have changed) the only issue I have is that they pulled my right leg out to get my out as i was a bit stuck, i have had hip issues my whole life. my brother doesnt have any issues from it though.
my mom said it was pretty painful but in her words "I knew I wouldnt die b/c i didnt die with david," my older brother.
I was told by my pre-natal instructor that a good way to get baby to turn is to get on all 4's and gently rock for 20 minutes a day.
how far along are you right now? has your dr's suggested a vaginal delivery?
I know a girl who was breech but that was 28 years ago so I dont know how much they allow it now days. I agree with the above posters, one word, OUCH!!!!!
If the baby hasn't turned by so many weeks (I'm not sure of the exact number) the Dr.s will usually schedule a C-Section. They don't even want to take the risk of having to try to deliver a breech baby, there are so many complications that can occur.
I wouldnt recommend it. My husbands sister was delivered this way and she is mentally slow from the lack of oxygen she got during the delivery. She doesn't work and is on SSI. She's 24 now.
I dontknowand I am aloscurious but one word! OUCH!
I've seen it on tv. Its not unheard of but many hospitals don't allow it. My adice would be to wait until your waters break and you are having contractions to see if your baby has turned. Most of the time the baby turns by the due date so you shouldn't have an issue or have the doctor or midwife try to turn the baby before you deliver.
I havent but im curious about this also!!
