It all depends on your Dr or midwife's instructions. I am GBS positive so I was told when my water breaks to go in right away. (Of course I'll get myself ready first, but I'm only 5 minutes from my hospital)

You do not have to go to the hospital immediately if your water breaks. It isn't an emergency. People labor for hours at home after their water breaks. Talk to your doctor or midwife to see what their specific instructions are.

After my water broke I labored at home for twelve hours before going in. It didn't matter where I was, I was still going to be waiting for contractions to get closer and stronger so I waited at home until they were about four minutes apart. I'd talked to my midwives during the day, they knew I was in labor, stable, and safe, and that I'd call them again when it was time to head in. I showered, ate, packed my bags, and spent time with my husband and my mom, talking and laughing and watching TV and basically staying distracted. It was much more comfortable than being stuck in a room being monitored all day. Even after heading to the birthing center and being admitted it was another nine hours before my little one arrived, med-free, with zero signs of infection in either of us. It was an excellent experience. I see no benefit to rushing to the hospital right away if your body is telling you it's going to be a while before anything major happens.

If your water breaks you should take your time to take a shower and get everything ready before you go. But only 10-15% of women's waters break. If contractions get to 3-5 minutes apart for more than an hour you can go in. I planned to labor at home. When my contractions started they were right from the start 2-3 minutes apart lasting 30-45 seconds. I waited 4 hours of that until I decided to go in. I was a 5 then 2 hours later my baby boy way born. All natural. After 24 hours of your water breaking there is a serious scare of infection but you don't need to go in right away. You can wait a couple hours. But it all depends on you. I prefer laboring at home.

Oh wow..okay so meaning im gonna have to get a plan ready and let hubs know when to get to the hospital then. So it could either ways be contractions first or water first but if water breaks then that's the immediate "go to hospital" signal? Thanks mommies!!

My water broke, I got in the shower and cleaned up, got my bags together, ate McDonald's then drove out to the ER which was an hour away.

I'm a ftm but I'm thinking you should go in as soon as possible chances are contractions will start and progress and soon as your water breaks

If your water broke call your mid wife before going in . unless told to go in immediately I would stay home for a bit shower up eat something then go in . it's not good to wait that long either don't want the baby to stay with out fluids or you to catch an infection either trust me eat before going in once on monitors they don't let you eat

If your water breaks go right away because you can get an infection after so long. And when your contractions are 5 min apart for an hour that's when you go to the hospital as well.
