102.3 feaver in 7 month old

This morning Julian woke up around 5 am and just had that look about him like Mommy I dont feel good. So I brought him in bed with me and he went back to sleep. I woke up about 3 hours later and he was burning up. I took his temp and it was 100.9. I called the doc and they made an appt. DH suggested it was probably because I layer him up to sleep..( Onsie and fleece pjs)  So I called the ped back and cancelled the appt. Around 4 pm he woke up from a nap and I noticed he was burning up agian so I took his temp ( he was only sleeping in a onsie at that point) and it was 102.3. I began freaking out. I called the ped and they got him in at 5:15. They gave him some tylonel in the office and the ped came in and said all he had was a gastrointestional infection and should be better in 5 days. She told me to give hime 1.2ML tylonel every 4 hous until hes better. Why do I feel like maybe she didnt do enough. I have never had a feaver that high. Is it ok or should I be concerned. His temp is still high and has yet to brake! Maybe I am overreacting but this is my little guy and it bothers me thats all she told me to do.

BTW he gets layered to sleep because even with the heat on super hot is room is freezing.

I hate bringing my kids into the doctors only for them to say it just needs to run its course!! Im not sure about a fever that high in a 7 month old but it dosent sound right for them tol just send you packing with some tyenol. Did they run any tests at all? Besides the tyenol have you tryed a lukewarm bath or frozen juice pops? My kids hate the bath but love the frozen juice pops:) I hope he gets better soon:) You and Julian are in my thoughts and prayers:)

I posted in the maternal forum but I wanted to add that when Noah had his high fever at this age they specifically told me NOT to do the lukewarm bath, something about shocking them and that it can actually make the fever get higher. I know your first thought is to do that and that is indeed what I did but I shouldn't have. Popsicles are a really good idea, I forgot to mention that one. Don't bundle him up so much right now when he has the fever.

Thats interesting I hadnt heard that about the lukewarm baths. I guess I could see that since babies are so prone to their temps changing so guickly, Thanks I'll remember that. Thank goodness that my son hasnt had a fever yet in all of his 5 months. Just a few colds. I dont think I have ever had the problem with the baths and my other children but its better to be safe than sorry:)

no it doesn't sound right to me at all. that temp is dangerously high. i don't know what tynenol is but baby definitely needs baby paracetemol. he should also just be in a nappy and have fans on him to try and bring the temp down. my friend had a fever of 102 when she was 3. she was in hospital and drs told her parents they'd probably lose her if it went to 103. i'd take him straight to er if you can't bring that temp down.

i am so used to my son running fevers, he has asthma, really bad allergies, and some sort of condition where he gets the RSV every 28-30 days. (he cant build up immunity to it) so at least 1-2 a month his fever jumps to 104-105 and it freaks me out!   i take all his clothes off, give him Tylenol, give him a look warm bath and just leave him wrapped in a towel and use a slightly cold cloth to rub the back of his neck behind his ears and his forehead, within 2 hrs. if his fever hasn't broke we have to make a trip to the e.r. so they can keep an eye on his fever because it has gone to 105.6.....i remember it was 103.7 the nurse gave him some Tylenol came back in an hour later and it went up to 104.5 so she immediately gave him Motrin....even though it wasn't in the 2-4 hour time frame to alternate it she said it was okay sometimes but only advised by the doc............i know how bad it can freak you out and if you feel something more is wrong and he still has a fever then take him to the e.r!!!!

crikey motherofan18month! that's way high! i agree, if she can't bring the temp down, a and e. i've gone every time i've been concerned with all my children and they really don't mind if it turns out to be nothing serious, they're all for staying on the safe side.

There is a really weird age gap where the nurse and Noah's doctor told me that high temp isn't dangerous. I couldn't believe that they didn't think that anything over 103 was dangerous but they don't anymore, they said that the info I had received was old information.

you know my kids have had temps up to 106 degree's and they say the same thing.  Tylenol for my son (because with a kidney thing they can't have anything else), a certain amount every 3 hours, and motrin and tylenol for my daughter staggered, motrin every 6 hours and tylenol every 4 they meet up once or twice a day can't remember, it's pretty normal.

And when their temps are over 103 they have to be taken to the hospital, because they will get i.v's and all that good stuff, they do blood tests, and all.

Usually what comes with the serious high temp, is diarrhea, just so you know.

=)  Just keep him hydrated.  and let him sleep when he does!

I had this happen to one of my daughters when she was about 3-4 years old (I know, not the same as an infant, but ...).  Her fever went over 105 and I FREAKED out.  Went to the doctor and they told me it was viral.  The next day it was still 105 and I had the doctor recheck her.  They said the same thing - - give her tylenol.  The third day that it was over 105, I decided to go to a different doctor, because this was just crazy.  That doctor said the exact same thing - - viral, give her tylenol.  That high fever lasted 4 stinking days, but then finally broke.

I was raised thinking that you get brain damage if you fever reaches 106, so I was terribly concerned, but the doctor's didn't think much of it.  It really upset me, but in the end, she was fine.

I sure hope Julian feels better soon!!!

Well his feaver broke then came back! Go figure! He went to bed last night at 10pm and awoke at 2and was up til 6ish. DH was up with him and I could not sleep because he just cried and cried! Poor baby.

Can a baby at his age have a popsicle? It seems young?!

Do you give him juice yet? I would maybe just do some homemade popscicles made from juice or get some 100% juice popscicles. I would only do it if he isn't taking in enough fluids, that's why I gave them to Noah, he wouldn't drink anything so I had to think of ways to make drinking fun. I also got him to drink out of a medicine syringe, he thought it was funny and that way I could monitor how much he was taking in.

gastrointestinal infection always accompanied by diarrhea. How the stool looks like? is it watery/runny or is it mucousy? runny stool means viral infection on the small intestine and mucousy stool means bacterial infection on the larger interstine. They both can pesent fever as symptom. If he has diarrhea then i said not to worry unless you found blood in his stool that he has to get a course of antibiotic to avoid the infection from spreading to bloodstream. if there is no blood, then just keep him hydrated and cool him down if the fever is too high (giving tylenol or paracetamol or sponge bath) until it resolves on its own. It may take up to 5days to resolve. I know all this beause my son had it twice and both are bacterial infection on the larger interstines. I know this can be very worrying as it was for me when my son has it. He is just turned 5 months old.

He can have a popcicle.  Get the 100% fruit kind, they have very little sugar, and it's the natural sugar that is in fruit.  Just hang in there, it always get worse before better.  Sometimes, there is this virus called Rosiola (sp?) and it starts with 5 days of a fever a high one, then it'll break completely and he'll get a rash.   There is nothing they can give him, but the rash happens once the fever has broke completely.  Just tylenol or motrin, or both, and lot's of fluids!!
