A questions> stripped the membranes, ect…..

by mamaofonetrying42, Jul 16, 2008 09:26AM
So I have my 38weeks appt. on Friday and was hoping to have my dr. would stripped my membranes, but I am not sure if he will or not. He has been out of town and I have not seen him since by 35week appt. We have not talked at all about what our “game plan” is. So I’m really looking forward to Friday to see what he says.

But My question is, for stripped the membranes, What stage do you have to be in? Like how dial and stuff? Or do you even have to be??

I know you do have to be partially dialated in order for the doc to insert his fingers through the cervix to reach the membranes themselves. I dont think you necc. have to be in a certain stage, but some docs wont strip the membranes until you are about 39 weeks.

Im not 100% certain on it though, I have never had my membranes stripped (that I know of). What I just posted is stuff I have learned from other mom to be's on the forum who have had their membranes stripped.

Wishing you the best!

In order for your membranes to be stripped the baby's head needs to be engaged and you need to be dilated enough for you doctor to insert a finger into your cervix - if your cervix isnt dilated at all, or not enough, then it wont be physically possible to strip your membranes.   Its also important that you are ready to be induced at this time - if dating is a little off then baby may not quite be ready to make an appearance.  These are all things that your doctor will take into account.

I have been having u/s everything 4weeks since I was 7weeks, my last u/s  I was 36weeks and baby has always been measuring big.....And my specialist had told my dr. to not let me go pass the 3rd. So i would rather do everything I can to go "on my own" then to be induce. You know?

Well hopefully things work out for you.  My experience has been most doctors like to wait to induce until the latest date that is still safe for you and baby so he may decide to wait thing out for another week or so like you so.  Of course, that assumes you have dilated!  If not, they will have to use other methods.

I had my membranes stripped with my last...I went in on a thursday...I was 2 cm and 50% effaced.  doc did her thing and over the next several days my contractions became more frequent and intense but nothing regular....that following monday I had my son.  I had mine stripped at my 38 weeks appt....my son came 10 days before his due date.

I, too, am hoping I've progressed enough that I can convince my doc to do it again this time. MY appt is tomorrow so we'll see.

I had my membranes stripped on a Friday and went into labor Sat morning and had my baby 8 hours later.  Worked for me!!!  I am 26 weeks pregnant now and my doc said she would strip them at 39 weeks this time.  I hope it will work again that fast!!

Another Question...If he does sweep my membranes can I go swimming after Or is that a NO NO?? And what are the odds of it working?

I spoke to my doctor about my hopes to labor ni the tub, and he said that would be fine unless my membranes had ruptured, in which case the risk for infection was too great. So, I'm guessing no pool, but I may be wrong. Good luck, I hope it happens really soon!!
