Anyone else lose wieght during pregnancy?

by Cheesecake7, Jul 28, 2008 12:59PM
I am 16 weeks today, and I am still down about 13 pounds. Im still pretty ill. So far everyone has said that it doesnt hurt the baby, that it only hurts me, but I keep reading that it isnt good for the baby.  Has anyone else had weight loss like this and overcome the struggle with some success?

if u ve hav completed 3 month then ur losing wt. can hurt ur baby. cos now baby gains wait. like double n 4timems then 6 times every week. so u should see the doctor n ask them how u can gain wt. and in mean time eat healthy n eat as much as u can. after 3 month of pregnancy u should gain wait. i think.

Im 16 weeks, so (I think) I am at the end of my 4 month.  My doctor just keeps saying that he isnt concerned about it.  I eat what I can, and some days I can eat okay, but other days I am just too sick and at any point there are a number of foods that trigger me to vomit. Its frustrating.  Thanks for your thoughts!

I am almost 29 weeks, I will be 29 weeks tomorrow, I have gained a total of 24 pounds, but at my last OB appointment I have dropped 1 pound, so instead of being 139 I am only 138 pounds. It is normal to go back and forth in weight with pregnancy, a lot of weight loss is caused by water weight and retaining water. My doc said that even though you do not swell you are still retaining water.

It also depends on what you weighed before you got pregnant.  If you were overweight or sort of 'on the border', losing some weight won't be a problem early on.  However, if you were close to underweight, losing *more* weight isn't good.  Tho I know they say early on it's "okay" to lose weight because many women are so overcome with morning sickness and can't keep anything down.

I think eating things that are protein rich can help you gain more weight.  Ask your doctor tho what foods he would recommend eating to help you gain back some weight.  But don't go nuts!  Because you may end up feeling so good you eat too much and gain too much weight!

I've only gained 5 pounds overall and I'm nearly 17 weeks ...one week I lost 4 pounds 'cause I just felt so miserable.  I know it's not as drastic as 13, but it does happen, and baby seems to be doing just fine regardless!

I hope you can figure out some way to keep food in you and gain a few pounds!!  But if you're doctor is not concerned, then don't try to worry too much.  When he starts telling you to eat tho ...listen!  =D

I'm pretty sure I've left you a REALLY long comment a long while back about my struggle with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). I was so sick during my first 18 weeks that I had to have a PICC line inserted (an IV that goes in through your arm and all the way in to an area near your heart, and stays in 24/7 for as long as needed) to get fluids/nutrition & stop me from losing weight. I lost 15 pounds during my ordeal and it was difficult not to get depressed thinking about how this was affecting my baby. Everyone kept telling me that the baby was getting everything he needed, but it was hard to comprehend. So... I understand where you're coming from. Around 21 weeks I finally started feeling a major improvement. I also had my ultrasound at that time and baby was very active, very healthy, and even weighed a few ounces more than average for age!! My health was outstanding and still is (I'm now up almost 20 pounds - never thought I'd be so happy to gain weight!), and baby has continued to thrive. It is true that nature will take care of your baby. The baby is taking everything out of you to grow and thrive, and you're the one suffering - not him/her. Just do what you can and continue staying positive - thats the best thing you can do for your little one. It sounds like you may have a case of HG as well (it can range from mild to severe); if so, it is normal for women who suffer from it not to feel improvement or start gaining weight until between weeks 16-20. If you reach 20 weeks and you're still having difficulties gaining weight, that's something you'll want to discuss w/your doctor. For me, changes in my diet, which were recommended to me by a nutritionist, helped me pack on the necessary pounds. I am now feeling great and I have a whole new outlook on life - the experience changed me in so many ways, all for the better. I suffered, but from that came a lot of personal growth and appreciation for life and for my amazing little baby, who gave me this new insight. I am forever grateful to him for it.

I wish you the very best, and hang in there - the best part of your pregnancy is just around the corner! :)

Thank you!  I kow that you did message me several weeks ago about this, and that helped a lot. I guess for some reason I was under the impression that I would be feeling better by now. Im about to go back to work after being off for the summer, so I am getting nervous about how to handle working with this, but I guess that is something that I will figure out in time. I appreciate your story. I have an u/s at 20 weeks, and will talk to my doctor then, but so far he isnt concerned about the wieght loss, which is a little over 7% of my prepregnancy weight so far.....   again I appreciate your story, it gives me hope.

It definitely depends on how healthy you were Pre-Pregnancy. I was under 100 pounds before I got Pregnant...so when I had my 3rd Prenatal a couple weeks ago and had lost half a pound my doctor was not happy. She said I'm so tiny to begin with that I always need to be gaining and gaining. But I was also sick to my stomach a lot and not eating much those days. She said it is "normal" to loose weight in the first trimester due to morning sickness but with me already being so small its not good to loose weight! So my goal for my next Prenatal (which is in 7 days) is to at least gain a few pounds! So we'll see. BUT if you started off over weight...and loose weight during Pregnancy thats not bad at all. It's actually healthier for the baby. So I wouldn't worry...and I can guarantee by the end of your second trimester and third you will gain weight...thats when most women do. So don't worry, your baby is getting everything he or she needs, just keep eating really healthy!

I just had my doctors appointment on Friday and i lost 4 pounds, which they just said we need to watch. I have been very sick for past few months with all day sickness, and now it only happens in the morning, i wonder when it will be over.

I had morning sickness the first 25 weeks of my pregnancy almost daily, and now have it about 1-2x a week still. I only put on 8lbs so far. (33w)

My doctor isn't worried about it as long as TJ is growing great. The same will go for you. basically the doctor told me that the baby is like a parasite and will take from you what it needs, even if it causes YOU to have depleted foodstores and energy.

Try drinking more juices and just eat whatever you can. IT doesn't even have to be super healthy as long as you can fit it down. That's what he told me to do. :)
