Blighted Ovum?

by stephanie1074, Dec 05, 2008 10:58AM
I went for an u/s on Wednesday and it wasn't good news. The tech said he saw a sac that measured 6.5 weeks but there was no baby, nothing. He was very unprofessional and made us feel quite uncomfortable from the beginning I might add. My doctor says he believes I have a blighted ovum. I'm not buying it. He sent me to another doctor and he was ready to sign me up for surgery and told me that I would miscarry and I should do a DNC or I would regret it. I just can't make that decision based upon one sonogram. My hcg levels on Wednesday were 16,693, which my doctor said himself, were good. I'm so confused. I have one daughter, 10 this month. My pregnancy was very easy and no female issues in my history, ever. I just don't think I can give up yet.

Any thoughts or advice?

I'm sorry you are going through this.  I know how frustrating and sad it can be wondering what's going on.  How far along are you supposed to be?  I agree that with hcg levels that high, it doesn't sound too good not seeing a baby and a heartbeat, but saying that, stranger things have been known to happen than a late showing baby.  I don't like it either when Dr's push an immediate d&c.  When I had a blighted ovum in Oct mine didn't even offer one, she had me take the misoprostol, but even that was after 2 u/s over a week apart that showed absolutely no growth.  Did you see the other Dr?  I would ask for one more u/s, if for nothing else than to make sure you are at peace if it comes down to a d&c that you gave it a chance.  Good luck!

Well I should be anywhere between 7-9 weeks. I know it's a huge difference in the growth, so that's why I'm doubting this right now. I have been told by several people that they were told the same thing and they refused the DNC and now have healthy children. I know it could be possible, I'm not completely ruling it out. However, for me, it's just too soon to give up yet. I have an appt with a new doctor on Monday at 8am to run more bloodwork and another u/s to see if there is any change. We are really hoping it was just the doctor's mistake. If not, then we will just have to wait and see what happens.

With levels that high there should be a baby and a heartbeat detected.    I had a blighted ovum in 2006.  I had a D&C because my body wouldn't begin to m/c naturally.  I felt so bad for doing it, but knew deep down I didn't have a viable baby.  I then m/c again the first of this year and did it naturally.  I don't know if you've had a m/c before, but to me there is nothing worse than flushing your own baby down the toilet.  I wish I could have had a D&C the last time, but I had already began to pass big clots when I got to the ER and they wouldn't do it.  See what Monday brings and I hope it was just a mistake from the doctor.

Ask for a repeat u/s, are you sure of your conception dates - could you not be as far along as you think. Did he see anything he termed a yolk sac??? At my first ultrasound at five weeks we saw only gestational sacs with yolk sacs and then two weeks later saw actually babies with beating hearts.
I have also been on the other side of that experience twice: one baby stopped developing at 6.5 weeks (had to have a d&c) and the second time an u/s at eight weeks revealed no yolk sac or baby (m/c naturally with that one) and repeat blood work showed my levels no longer doubling (or even anything close).
Are they doing bloodwork on you??? Don't make a hasty decision because you docotor is pushy. Good luck and here is to hoping he is very very wrong. If he is I would switch!!!

just so everyone knows, my doctor told me today that the heartbeat is usually not detected until hcg level is 18,000.

I found out I had blighted ovum that day after christmas last year.  I had a positive preg test about a week or two before then when I got up that morning I had alot of bleeding.  when they did the us I had a empty sac and my hcg levels were very low.  I didnt have to do a dnc because I miscarried naturaly and had blood work done once a week til my hcg levels were neg.  Your levels sound awfuly high to have blighted ovum... I think mine were only at like 90 then steadily droped from there.  I would definitly want blood work done if I were you to see if your hcg level is going down to confirm thats what it is first.

I was 6 weeks when they said i had a blighted ovum becasue I was bleeding for 9 days straight. Turns out they were wrong! Im 21 weeks pregnant now. I wouldnt worry until 8 weeks or so. If they still dont see a baby or a heartbeat around 8 weeks then i would worry. Alot of the times you can see something at 6 weeks (yolk sac ect) but not all the time. Its so small they have to really look for it. I will keep you in prayers.

I have had HCG levels checked only once and that was the day of the sonogram that started all of this. They were good according to my doc. They are basing this all on the fact that the sonogram showed an empty sac. We were probably in the sonogram for a total of about a minute or so. He didn't mention anything except "here's the sac, and it's empty"....that's all he kept saying. Oh, I have a tilted uterus also. Maybe he didn't angle it right, maybe I'm a week or so off on my dates....that combined, MAYBE they are wrong. I have no cramping, have had NO bleeding or even spotting......they were just too quick to rush me off to have a D & C. I won't do it......too many "maybe's". This will work one of two ways and it will happen on its own as far as I'm concerned. Thank you all for sharing with me. I will keep posting as things progress.

I went to the doctor immediately when I found out I was pregnant and at 5 weeks the doctor could not see a sac or anything.  I had to wait a week and go for a 2nd u/s which then showed the sac.  At that visit, the doctor said a low heartbeat. I was very uncomfortable so I changed doctors.  That was the best decision.  Go to your new doctor and go from there.  There is nothing worse that a doctor you can't talk to!  Good luck!
