Science has proven that drinking on a regularRegular insulin basis can harm your unborn baby. Anything you eat or drink directly affects the fetus, and alcohol is no exception. Because no amount of alcohol use during pregnancy has been proven safeSafe driving for teens Safe sex , it is best to avoid all types and amounts of alcohol while you are pregnant. The March of Dimes, whose missionMission prenatal Mission prenatal hp is “To improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.” recommends that pregnant woman, nursing woman and woman who may become pregnant or are attempting to become pregnant should avoid all alcohol, including beer, wine, wine coolers and hard liquor.
The fact is, while we do know what can happen to babies who were exposed to regular alcohol consumption, we do not know what can happen to children whose Mothers drank in moderation. Some of the common life long problems that children who were exposed to alcohol during their mothers pregnancy include:
Low birth weight
Problems with eating, sleeping, colic
Vision and hearing problems
Problems with following directions and learning to do simple things
ADHD and other problems paying attention and learning in school
Mood disorders, controlling their behavior and getting along with others
These children need medical care all of their lives and do not get better. They may need special teachers and schools and will be considered high needs or special needs. Children who are born with these symptoms have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
No it was a real post. I am clueless about all this & i searched ask jeeves and didn't find anything. I dont mean to sound dumb but Im new with this & Im a college student trying to figure everything out. I was pretty sure you couldnt get drunk but Ive heard you could drink wine occasionaly. SOrry
You are not supposed to drink because it could harm your baby. I would ask your dr about an occasional glass of wine, I know wine is used with your blood, I think to thin it, but I don't think that it should be drank for pregnancy. Cindy posted a really good article about drinking and what it can do to your baby.
My doctor always told me that an occasional glass of red wine is a good source of iron, only if you are anemic, which I always am during pregnancy, but I would not suggest it otherwise. Like cindy said, there isn't anything that shows the proven side affects from a mother that drank in moderation. Especially being in college and being new to pregnancy, I'm sure you have people saying, Oh yeah girl, you can drink once in awhile, it won't hurt the baby!! But, the truth of the matter is, it potentially can.....even though I'm anemic during pg, I still always just take my extra iron supplement, regardless of what the doc says. Good luck to you with your pg, and I really hope that you do some more research, and make the wise choice. Here's a site to get you started....
Thank you a lot. Im sorry for sounding dumb. Im still learning all I can about this. It was a very unexpected pregnancy & none of my friends no much either. Sorry for annoying some of you.
You're not dumb, just uninformed! Anything you eat or drink or inhale will pass through the placenta to the baby. Just imagine giving a baby a bottle full of alcohol or a cigarette... that's exactly what you are doing, only in more diluted doses.
If your baby is born with anything in their system, they can take your baby away at the hospital. It can also cause retardation.
