I am in the same boat as you.  I was going to ask my doctor this week if she has any suggestions... I am only in my 4th month and will probably go insane if I don't find a resolution soon!!! :)  I will let you know if she has any good suggestions! ;)

I had a similar problem right around the 6-7 month point where my ribs and shoulders and back were starting to bother me quite a bit from ONLY laying on my side.  I would say that using a body pillow definitely helps a lot (it keeps your knees apart... so that helps the backaches).  But what really helped with the shoulder/rib pain, was when I bought an "eggcrate" mattress pad to put on top of my mattress.  I'm not sure what they're actually called but I bought mine at Walmart (for maybe $15)... it's a memory foam-type pad that has all these wiggly bumps and curves and patterns that actual contour your body instead of having your neck bent at a funny angle or having your shoulders all squished up.  It was a miracle worker for me... you could always give that a try.

I'm going thru the same thing at 5 months.  My shoulders start aching in the middle of the night, so I turn on my back till my body tells me 'no' ...then I go back to my side.  I started using a pillow between my knees and that helped my backache, like it did for Wendy, but my shoulders are taking the brunt of it now.  There are days I can still sleep on my tummy, but it gets uncomfortable a lot faster now and I end up back on my side.

It also doesn't help that our box spring has been broken for some time now and the bed 'sags' towards the middle, so my body tries to make up for that as well.  Leave it up to my hubby and son to wrestle and slam one another onto our bed.  *sigh*  lol  Maybe if I lay the box spring straight on the ground instead of the frame it will help a little.

I may try Wendy's trick with the egg crate mattress pad.  I've seen them in the store plenty of times.  Anything to help get me sleeping thru the night before the little one starts waking me up!!

Another thing that you could try is getting a bunch of pillows and stacking them up slightly behind you so that you are at a slight incline.  Then that way you can sleep on your back.  My doc said that as long as you arent flat on your back you are ok.  Or when you are lying in bed get a row of pillows on your side and kind of prompt your back and your butt on them so you are laying on the pillows more than your shoulders.  If that makes any sense.  Good luck.

I thought that a higher pillow would help too, but actually the smaller one did the trick!  You could also prop your pillow up and lay on your back but propped up.  Also, if you dont get out of breath, you are allowed to sleep on your back.  If it isnt uncomfortable to you than it is fine for baby.

i hate sleeping on my sides.  i am 15 weeks and i swore the doctor ruined my life last week when he told me i could not sleep on my back any more.  i like the idea of proping myself up with pillows.  i guess that makes sense as long as you are not completely flat.

well after my first hellish night of sleeping my my sides and i cried all night, my fiance went to the Burlington Coat Factory baby depot and bought one of those huge pregnancy body pillows for $40.  it does help a lot.  i mean i would rather sleep on my back but this at least helps me find a more comfortable place on my right side.  i can not sleep on my left.  my doctor told me left was better but that right was fine too.

I guess it's a lazy boy for you guys! One and only place my sister can sleep after month 4. I hope that since I am a natural side sleeper than I'll be alright.
