Choosing a doctor

Choosing a doctor

So i'm 11 weeks tomorrow, feeling okay..still nauseated and tired all the time. As some of you know I used the same doctor in Michigan for 2 of my 3 boys, absolutely adored my doctor. I however am in a different state, and nervous about using a different doctor. I know what i'm looking for as far as wants and needs in a practitioner, just not sure how to get them. I don't want to seem stuck up, but after losing my daughter in 2002, I am very very picky as far as the honesty and lack thereof that most doctors have.

My Doctor in Michigan was very honest with me, about everything, and it was very easy to get what I expected out of him as a doctor, but i'm not so sure I can get the same around here.

How do I go about explaining what I want and what I need to a doctor, and how do I make sure that even after explaining what I expect, that I will actually get that in the long run?

I do however plan on moving back to Michigan after my personal business is dealt with, but i'm not sure if that will be before the baby is due. So I need to make sure I have a back up here in Iowa.

Maybe you could call the hospital and talk to some L&D  nurses and see who they suggest. You could also set up a few consultation appts with a few OB's and get a feel from them like that! The downside to this is that it is time consuming and you could also be charged an office visit! : (

Do you have any family or friends in Iowa that could give you some suggestions?? I know how important it is to have the perfect OB!

Good luck and I hope you have a speedy quest!

Well you could always call the OB floor at whatever hospital you think you are going to deliver at and tell them what type of OB doctor you are looking for and ask them if they have any suggestions.  If you call the OB office they are probably going to tell you what you want to hear unless you get somebody who is not afraid to be honest.  Talk to people in your community see if they know anybody that they or somebody they know really liked.  It's never a guaranteed thing that you will like your doctor but the good news is you can always switch.  I know not the most ideal thing but it is an option.  Good luck and I hope you find the right one the first time.  Congratulations.

Nope...no friends or family here in Iowa. Everyone I know is in Michigan, got dragged down to Iowa for a divorce from my husband, and because we have children from the marriage, I had to move here during the divorce because he had temporary visitation every Wednesday. But now with the divorce finally almost over (In August) I will be able to move back home to Michigan. I know the doctor who delivered my other 2 boys will also deliver this one, but moving is expensive and I'm not sure when I can get back home.

I'm almost 3 months along and I haven't even seen a regular OB yet. I have been to the ER 2 or 3 times because of a cyst on my ovary, but that was at 4 weeks and at 6 1/2 weeks.

I'm praying I can get back home after the divorce is final, that way I know I have a wonderful  doctor who is willing to deliver me, especially a doctor I have known for over 4 years.

ONe thing I recommend is researching their medical license and making sure they do not have any board disciplinary actions against them.  As the other said, ask around the L & D nurses.  Anytime you see a pregnant woman ask her who her ob is and how she likes him and explain that you are looking for one.  Then narrow it down to a few and make appts to go talk to them and tell them exactly what you told us here.  Then see who gives you the best vibe.
