Contractions and Water Breaking

by Grandmatobe, May 13, 2008 03:24PM

Just curious - - - how many of you who were in the late stages of pregnancy, had contractions that didn't necessarily "hurt", but your water broke anyway?  My daughter is having a hard time waiting during the last two weeks (she is 38w), because there isn't much going on to indicate labor is near.  She is having contractions, but they really don't hurt.  I was just wondering if it is possible that her water could break somewhat "out of the blue", without having fast and hard contractions?

Thanks!!!

yup! it is 100% possible. My sister had absolutly no contractions or anything to hint that she was close to delivery, and she got up to get dressed to take her other kiddos to the park ans *splash* her water broke without any indication, about 2 hours later her baby boy was born.

Sounds like me!  I had mild contractions up until about a week of my due date, then during the night 1am without any warning my water broke out of the blue, and hard contractions started.  6 hours later I had my dd.

yes it is very possible. I didn't have any contractions I thought i wet the bed. LOL! I got up at about 5am thinking I wet myself until I went to the bathroom and it wasn't coming out of the pee whole. i was young and had no idea what was going on.

It happened to me. I wasn't feeling ANY contractions and then I was taking a nap had only been laying in bed for about 10 minutes when *pop* my water just randomly broke. I was 38 weeks at the time too!

this didnt happen to me. but for the weeks leading to my sons birth i was having a lot of contractions, and i wasnt sure if they were real or not. and there was NO sign of labor anywhere. i could have sworn i was going to be pregnant forever. i was 3 days overdue and out of the blue contractions hit me at 5 mins apart and about a min long. when i got to the hospital and they hooked me up to everything then my water broke.

For those of you who said this happened with you, I am wondering, did you lose your mucous plug and were you dilated for any amount of time before, or did it just sneak up on you all at once? I've been having a lot of contractions, more than usual.. But they don't hurt and my water hasn't broke and my mucous plug hasn't showed up..[but also I am 1 cm and thinning out quite a bit] Just wondering if the same thing is happening to me ??

I feel left out.  :(

I've had two babies so far and both times the doctors broke my waters for me.

I would love to experience the excitement of it happening naturally...

now watch, you're water is going to break in the middle of walmart, and everyone's gonna look at you funny! THAT would be exciting lol!!!
but to me, with the way their prices are going right now, i wouldn't be surprised, and since i'm at walmart consistently lol, i am almost sure i'll go into labor at walmart, best buy, lowe's or ross lol.....

KStarr - - I think you are about a week behind my daughter, so I imagine you are going through some of the same things.  Yesterday, she started cleaning her room like crazy and moving stuff around, so the first think I thought of was "nesting" - - but nothing happened.  I think she just wants to see some signs, but hopefully at her doctor's visit tomorrow, she will find out if she is dialating and thinning out.  At least it gives her some hope that the end is coming.

Atlantisea:  Don't feel bad.... with both of my pregnancies, they had to break my water .  With the first one, I went to the hospital at 5 cm and it still didn't break on it's own... Go figure.

It's completely possible...with my 3rd I was barely having but a few contractions a day, nothing major...i woke up at midnight when my water broke...that's when the contractions hit...

BUT it's also possible taht the contractions will hit first and the water won't break until further into labor...that happened to me iwth # 4
