Control the eggs freshness

by milca, Mar 04, 2009 03:13PM
Hello

I have some eggs in the fridge but the due date is not clear. I read that there is a way to control their freshness by putting them in a glass of water. If they sink, it's ok but if they raise to the surface, it was not.
My questions are: should i also add salt in the water to make the test ? If they sink, can i use them in my omelet?
I know that eggs can be harmful for my baby so i just want to make sure i am doing the right thing.

The eggs are fine as long as they are not raw.  To know if they are fresh or not you have to crack them open in a bowl and if the yolk is still yellow then its still good but if the yolk is orange/red then throw out they are no good.

I agree with Mumita, I use eggs that are past their due dates all the time!  I mean in every day life, how many people actually pay attention to the due dates on eggs?  LoL sorry but if I know that I have had them for awhile, then I will crack them in a seperat bowl and if they look like they are red or orange, then I throw that egg away and pull out another until I find a fresh on to use :D

You can actually use eggs past the date. If you think the eggs have been in there longer than a month, throw them out. But if they were a more recent purchase, eat them.

I hard-boil eggs when they're close to the expiration date so they last at least a week longer.
