Controversial Question............

How many of you think it is okay to have just one glass of wine during pregnancy?  I think there will be mixed opinions on this, but I wanted to know.  I actually have like one glass every few months so that would be a total of three or four throughout the entire pregnancy--never more than one in a sitting...........just curious to see what you all think:)

I have heard mixed oppinions, but when I asked my OBGYN he said even a glass of wine could cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. He said no alcohol is safe when you are pregnant. Personally I would not risk hurting my unborn baby. The decision is all yours it may have no affect or it may. I would reccomend to ask your practicioner.

My OBGYN said that as long as I was past the first trimester a glass of wine now and then was absolutely fine.  Especially if I needed to relax...

I think it is up to the person....for me I figured why risk it for just one glass of wine, at the end does it really matter, did you even get a buzz or have fun off of it.  It is only 9 nine months and once you have your baby you realize how fast that time flew by.  Also that nine months could shape their life and if anything were to go wrong and I felt I could have been to blame I could never live with myself.  So during my pregnancy I cut out alcohol, deli meat, sushi, and most cheese.  But again it is up to the person, with me I was not willing to take any risks.  When I needed to relax I got a prenatal massage.

I think its all up to the person. I ts a decision only you can make = ]  People continue to smoke knowing that it causes birth defects and what not.. thats a personal choice.. So in all honesty hun... its up to you and your feelings about the situation

Well I am 33 weeks and my 21st birthday is in a week! So Yes, I will be having a glass of wine :)

I tried a sip of beer so far in this pregnancy and it make me sick and I threw up all night.... soooo I'm hoping wine will be better. Just one glass though.

my doctor says a glass of wine or a beer occasionally while pregnant will not hurt anything.  With my first son, I did drink about 1/2 glass of wine on mother's day, and puked my guts out!!  With my daughter, even the smell of alcohol would make me throw up!!  With this one, I have just chosen to completely stay away from it!!  I did go to a bachelorette party a couple of weeks ago, and didn't last very long.  I came home early with a terrible headache and stomachache!!

I drank a glass of wine here and there (when i felt up to it) during my pregnancy. I am Italian so we drink wine. =) I never had a problem and once in awhile, in my opinion, is fine and won't hurt anything. I now have a very healthy 3 week old baby boy! <3

my ob actually said after  you hit about 20 weeks, most of the brain ( i think he said brain), is already developed, so a *small* glass of wine is ok, but i don't drink wine, so he said a wine cooler, which is more sugar than alcohol like half of one is ok, or even a malt stle, like smirnoff, is ok, but when it came to the wine coolers or smirnoff, only at most a *6 pack* during my last half was ok.....he actually said smirnoff, or bartles and james, apparently those 2 manufacturers add more flavor and sugar to their *drinks* than alcohol.....i dont drink much, but we went to this brewery last w/e for a group outing, and i had half a watermelon smirnoff.....and he said that was fine.....it a repeat drinking or every day that he says can lead to fas, or esp if alcoholism runs in family, or often drunk during first 10 weeks does it more often than later in preg.....IMO, i say have your wine, you deserve it! at the most, you'll feel alot more buzzed than normal, and i'd just make it that 1 little 4 oz glass

but it is up to you, and i know alot of people  may bash me for that, but my ob has said as long as it's rare, it's ok, and helps with stress.....*but don't use it all the time or when you're BREASTFEEDING!* the french always drink during pregnancy and i never hear of those babies having fas....

Thanks so much for your input..............it's interesting to get different opinions on this topic.  I probably had a total of three glasses through my first pregnancy and my son was born with a heart defect---although my doc said it had nothing to do with having a "rare" glass of wine here and there.  Non-pregnant I like to enjoy a few nights out per month and I am starting to miss that!  My other half goes for happy hour once a week so that is a source of argument for us:(  Anyway, I hope you ladies are all feeling well!!!!

My ob said one glass on red wine once a week is fine.  She actually recommended it because it would help me sleep.  It's all choice, I never did it but not because I was afraid of the affects...I just never had the desire.

anything that is questionable in my opinion isnt worth doing. but as others said, it is a choice and you should make it with great care and based on your baby, you guys are sharing a body!

Worth a look!

I don't know.  I drank ALOT when I was 16 before I found out I was pregnant with my son.   By alot I mean like 2 pints of hard liquor by meself at times and he is 4 now and the smartest child his age I have literally ever met.  But once I found out I was pregnant I never did it again.
Would I risk it being pregnant now...no.  I might literally taste one sip of something my hubby is drinking but that would be as far as I would go.  It's just not worth it to me to take that risk.
Also everyone keeps saying "one glass of wine"  like it's a small amount.  Wine has a VERY high alcohol content.  Drinking one glass of wine is about the same if not worse then having one or more beers.     10ml of wine has a content of 17.5 % as where 11.4ml of beer only contains 4%

My OB's ANAL about it (if it gets blocked I said A n A l). lol, She says no to EVERYTHING.. well...

I've gone in the hot tub 2X a mo. or more while pregnant and eat sushi all the time (i trust the place and know when fish is FRESH. I won't eat it if it doesn't pass my sniffer) I also have had a glass of wine about 1X a week since I hit 3 months. Some times its 2X a week sometimes NONE.

It's up to you. I can tell you tho, I'm just over 5 months pregnant, and my baby is fine. I had a checkup yesterday and he's growing normally and on track.

I think it's safe. BTW.. I had a (JUST 1) wine cooler last night.. those have 1/2 the alchahol content of wine.. so I didn't feel bad. :)

they have alcohol removed wine that you can drink, if you really like wine and want the flavor of it...my friend brought some to a house warming party for me and the pregnant host. i personally dont like wine, but theres an idea

Good ol' fashioned sparkling cider or grape juice tastes great and you can drink it in a wine glass. Honestly I don't know what the big deal is about alcohol. You can have fun without it! Wine is just glorified juice.

Also to add to my previous comment....again I think it is totally your choice.....but I think any more than a glass of wine every once in a while can lead to more things than what people think.  Yeah your baby maybe be "healthly" on the outside...or growing just fine, but years down the road could have learning disabilities or even may be more prone to alcohol or drug abuse.  I think since it is your 21st B-day celebrate have fun.  I am sure you deserve a samll glass of wine...but definitely stop there.
Also as a side note, if you do choose to drink alcohol while you are pregnant I would highly suggest not doing it around others.  From my own opinion I have seen pregnant women with a glass of wine and everyone in the room will stop their conversations to stare.  It is just very tacky in mixed company.
