Hi. I had a copper IUD inserted approx. 4-8 weeks after birth of my daughter, which was 5 years ago & periods have continued to be very heavy. So, heavier / longer periods is normal, but you may want to have the doc check to make sure it's inserted properly JIC.

The copper IUD will make you bleed some and spot a little bit at first.  In all honesty it takes about 3-6 months for your body to get used to it, so you will spot in between periods.  Being that you just gave birth, your body is asjusting to the IUD and not being pregnant.
The copper IUD is the best form of BC in my opinion, no side effects, no hormones, just this little thing in your uterus that kills sperm.  The other thing is that it changes the PH in your uterine lining making it more acidic (that's how it kills sperm) so your discharge will be different.  Always watch for BV because of the changing PH in your uterus the discharge will be different and sometimes when its more acidic you are more likely to get BV (It only happened to be once).
But once your body adjusts to it, its as if nothing is there.

I had this random pain similar to what an afterbirth contraction felt like.  It would double me over and I would have to just stop what I was doing for a while and sit.  Come to find out it was upside down and cockeyed, thus causing the pain.  My Dr said it more than likely happened when it was inserted. ( I had a different Dr at the time of insertion) So if it feels funny or you have any pain you may want to ask for an ultrasound to confirm it's positioning.  MIne was in the beggining stages of growing into the wall.  Needless to say I had it removed.

I did not have any periods after the first month or two.
