Down's Syndrome

by Mishie555, Jun 29, 2008 08:39PM
My last pregnancy, I was 18 weeks pregnant when we learned that our baby had Down's Syndrome, I was 38. From what I have read  our chances of having another Downs Syndrome baby is 1 %. I just turned 39 and have had 2 failed IVF attempts in the past 6 months. During our fertility cycles, I produced 5 eggs the first time and 7 eggs the second time, so, my question is... Does the 1% chance apply to a normal 1 egg drop per cycle? Are my chances of haveing a Downs Syndrome baby higher now since I have used up more eggs, which would have been 12 regular menstrual cycles? Does this make sense?
Thank you!

Well, I know a woman is born with all her eggs and they age as we grow older.  eggs drawn at age 32 are 32 years old, eggs drawn at 40 are 40.  It does't make your next Egg retreval one year older...that is my unprofessional but logical answer.  They are all the same age as you are upon retreval.  This is why women who want to have children later in life or once they find a partner may have a retreval in their 30s.  These eggs are of better quality perhaps because they were frozen in time.  Best of luck with everything you are going through.
