I had a slice of cake made by my sisster in law. Turns out she mixed the old frosting in our fridge with new frosting when icing the cake. The old frosting apparently expired 7 months ago! It was Betty Crocker and had no mold, did not smell
I had no idea and now I am worried sick b.c I am 8 months pregnant. Does anyone know if frosting expires? Can Listeria be found in frosting? Should I get tested? HELP!
You're probably just fine. I took a culinary arts class that required us to study foodborne illnesses. Mold is actually penicillin (and you said you didn't even see any). Many food expirations are a guideline and as long as the frosting was refridgerated you should be fine.
And your baby will be fine too. If you become sick (please don't make yourself sick because you're worrying! You can actually make yourself sick, it's called hypocondria), then you should see your doctor. The worst that can happen is you'll have diarrhea and vomiting.
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that is found in water and soil. Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil, and animals can also be carriers. Listeria has been found in uncooked meats, uncooked vegetables, unpasteurized milk
and processed foods. Listeria is killed by pasteurization and cooking. There is a chance that contamination may occur in ready-to-eat foods such as hot dogs and deli meats because contamination may occur after cooking and before packaging.
