For The Pregnant Ladies - Will you be getting the H1N1 vaccine?

As you are all aware of the H1N1 flu (or swine flu), Doctors and researchers are stating that kids and pregnant woman are top priority in getting this vaccine - they are also saying it really isn't affecting the elderly population. But that pregnant woman are much encouraged to get this vaccine when it becomes available. Me, I basically work in the healthcare world - I'm a Massage Therapist and I come into contact with many people throughout a given day. So, with it being a new vaccine and all, will you be getting the vaccine? What are your thoughts?

i voted yes i normally get the flu shot anyways ive gotten it since i was 18   one yr i missed it and got horribly sick so i always get it. i have heard that it will be ready sometime in oct but im not to sure about when or if thats even true

I am definitely NOT getting this vaccine. It is a LIVE vaccine and has already killed people. I'm not injecting a LIVE virus into myself while pregnant, or into any of my family. When the polio vaccine was first invented it was live, and it killed too many people. Now, the polio vaccine is an inactive virus. I just don't feel safe getting the vaccine. The "benefits" do NOT outweigh the risks, to me. Just because you get the vaccine doesn't mean you wont still catch the flu. I got my flu shot for the first time last year and ended up with a severe case of the flu, as did my son. I'm not going to get a potentially deadly medication injected into me just because it "MIGHT" protect me from a flu. A flu that - if you're a strong healthy young adult - you can fight by yourself.

Agree with RawrDiino. Also, no one has released the ingredients in this vaccine. It could contain mercury for all you know.

So I voted, "NO WAY". I think it's more risky, at this particular point, to take that vaccine. And most likely I've already been exposed to H1N1. Everyone reacts to it differently. AND not to mention: more people have died from regular, seasonal flu than from this particular strand. It's a bunch of hoopla.

My office manager had H1N1 - she's fine. I WAS EXPOSED TO HER, almost daily, while she had it before she found out thats what it was. I never caught it. I work in the medical field, and probably have been exposed to it who knows how many times.

Wash your hands frequently, and if you get sick go to the doctor. I'm not going to shoot myself with a potentially deadly liquid over something as benign as a flu bug. Here's the big thing - is doctors dont know ENOUGH about H1N1 OR the vaccine to say yay or nay on safety. And I know this because I WORK WITH DOCTORS. They're only saying "have the vaccine" cause they've been told we need it. Blah blah blah, I'm not risking my life, or my family.

When you have a live vaccine - your body sheds the vaccine through saliva, skin cells, feces and urine for weeks. Risking infecting everybody around you. In my honest opinion, the H1N1 vaccine is going to CAUSE the epidemic.

Yes. I even tried to get the regular Flu shot today and was denied. They told me to wait until October but I'm a little worried because we are going out of the country in a couple of weeks. Anyways when we get back we are getting the H1N1 and the regular flu shot. No chances here.

Lance- yes I do. Doctors are not gods and often push very unnecessary procedures and things on patients. It's called defense medicine. And it is NOT always in the best interests of the patients or the country.

I must also add that I have talked to doctors, to nurses- the consensus between them all has been the same: THEY DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT TO PROMOTE IT. The people pushing it are all government officials.

I vaccinate my children against other diseases and they're up-to-date. But this is one vaccine that my DH and I are adamantly against.

im with the "NO WAY" crew. i dont really believe in vaccines besides the very important ones that they know a whole ton about like the chicken pox vaccine and all the other childhood ones.  but i dont get the flu shot so im not going to get the swine flu shot either. it makes me more nervous to inject myself with it then to face the world and leave it up to chance. i havent heard of anyone dying from swine flu in washington and im not so sure there will be a huge epidemic of it in the winter time...but thats just me. my baby is too precious for me to inject myself with a practically unkown trial drug...until theyre experts and know the pros and cons better than just swine flu or no swine flu then im not taking it! im with joy if the docs cant tell u exactly whats in it then i am not sticking it anywhere near my unborn child.

I'm not going to get it.  And, I hope I don't regret not getting it.  But, it's still too new of a vaccine and there isn't any research at all abou tlong term effects on the unborn baby.  Also, I am pretty sure the CDC said they are no longer giving live vaccines and that was a thing of the past.

If the H1N1 virus does reach a state of pandemic, as predicted by the CDC, then any pregnant women that becomes infected with the virus is potentially risking her life as well as that of her unborn baby.  Current estimates suggest that up to 25% of individuals could be inflicted w/ H1N1.  Pregnant women are in a "high risk" category and could suffer much more serious complications from H1N1 than the general public.

The H1N1 vaccine is currently being manufactured and will be subject to clinical trials BEFORE it will ever be made publicly available.  While any risks from the vaccine are not known CURRENTLY they will be before the vaccine is distributed.

Some of the vaccines in clinical trials are made from the live virus however, vaccines will also be available from attenuated and inactivated virus.

There is a very good reason why the government is recommending the certain individuals get the H1N1 vaccine.  Studies have shown that this virus targets pregnant women and the consequences can be quite severe.  

Anyone that chooses not to get the H1N1 vaccine should be aware of the actual facts regarding this vaccine which are available from the cdc website.

I am not pregnant... I am not sure if I am getting it or not.. For a while I siad I was but I want to speak with my doctor and sons ped before making a decision. I trust bothe docs to tell me the facts they know.

With Julian having a Congenital heart defect that if he were to get the flu could cause some complications but wany yo ask the Cardiologist when we go. On the other hand I am a stay at home mom and he rarely has contact with other children so Im not sure the risk is as high for him as it would be if he went to a child care facility.

My husband and I were going to TTC but decided it may be smart to wait until the brunt of this has passed and I would not want to get sick and harm my unborn baby as well....

5 vaccines (measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and varicella) (varicella is chicken pox) are LIVE virus vaccines. i learned this in my medical assistant classes so because it is a live virus doesnt mean its not as bad as the other vaccines. the H1N1 is just a newer vaccine. but like RawrDiino said if u get a flu shot and still get the influenza, it just means u got a differernt strain than what u were vaccinated for.

just a reminder for those whom get confused sometimes, the flu vaccine is for influenza NOT the stomach flu. i get lots of patients asking why they still got the flu (stomach flu) not knowing the vaccine is against influenza.

I had the flu for the first time this jan, me and my daughter it was aweful. So...I will definitely talk to the doc about it when i go for my first prenatal visit next week. I cant imagine getting sick like that again especially while pregnant.

Blah blah blah... is basically what I'm hearing here, so I figured that I would join in and give ya'll my two cents.  First off I agree with everyone who has said that the "normal" flu kills more people per year that the H1N1 that is coming (or so they think).  Now my OB hasn't tried to sway me into getting it and he hasn't said not to either, because truly he doesn't know.  And everything that the CDC has said this far is just based on the patters of other flus and virious, which makes sence because H1N1 hasn't hit us ye or hasn't become a pandemic yett.  Now I'm still not sure why there is such an up-raw about this at this time, because we really aren't sure how it's going to affect everyone.  Like someone had said before, they were exposed to it everyday before the women found out that she was even sick, and nothing happen to her.  So I beilive that as long as you're washing your hands on a regual bases and trying to stay away from people who are sick, we should all be fine.  

However, pregnant women who work in the health care field should possibly get the vaccination because of their risk to exposure and the fact that it could harm your baby.  All other pregnant women should be awear of the affects of the flu and to seek medical help if and when is neccessary.

The trace amount of mercury in vaccines does NOT cause autism - this has been PROVEN by MANY scientific studies.  The only reason that a paranoia has developed regarding mercury in vaccines is because a doctor, who has since lost his license, published data in a prestigious medical journal that was based on a very, small group of people.  The medical journal has since stated they would not have published that article has they had all the facts at the time (some information was withheld).  There is simply NO link between mercury-containing vaccines and autism or any other medical condition.

i am a highschool teacher...ill be 11 weeks pg 2m....and i dont know whether or not i will get the flu shot...the scary thing about h1n1 vaccine is the fact that our nurse said it is not fda approved...maybe it will be..who knows...and the side effects are unknown....side effects..to me are bad enough......not knowing or being aware of the possible ones..........make me ill.....she said it should be ready about oct 15...univ of pitt..carnegie mellon already have cases..as well as ohio schools..and flordia...and its not even flu season.....i am confused...and never got the flu shot..so i dont know if i will get that either.....

well, since there IS a link between mercury and autism (that is why DOCTORS tell you not to eat fish that contain large amounts of mercury while pregnant), it has been documented that the SWINE FLU vaccine in particular has VERY high amounts of mercury ... it follows logically that if exposed to high levels of mercury (regardless of the source) you increase the risk of autism and mental retardation in your children. Why take the added risk? it's not worth it, the swine flu is unlikely to kill you in the first place. I pity you all who swallow advice without ever thinking for yourself or your progeny. For the love of God, do some research.

I'm not getting it. It is too new for me to trust. When I got my ultrasound last week I talk to my doctor about it. She said that yes, she has to offer it to her patients, but she will NOT tell them they should or shouldn't get it. I also asked her if she was pregnant, would she do it. She said NO. It was enough for me.

Also, most doctors and nurses that I have asked about this vaccine said that they would not give it to their own families!  That ought to tell you something!!! Mercury may possibly be related to developmental delay not autism. There is no known trigger for autism. The MAIN reason imunizations got linked to autism is autism usually starts to show at around 18 months (along with most developmental delays) so it was FALSLY linked to the immunizations.

As for the H1N1 vaccine if I were pregnant I would get it. I don't get the regular flu shot but I would this one. My boyfriend is an emerg nurse in a big city and every pregnant woman that came in with H1N1 ended up in the ICU with serious complications. Women up to a month post partum are also hit hard. This flu hits harder and the concern is the number of patience that develope pneumonia as well as high fever. A high fever during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the unborn child.

You do come in alot of contact with people that you don't know if they are sick or not.  So I think you are right to consider what is best for you and your baby.  From what I have researched this H1N1 (Swine) Flu hits pregnant women extremely hard. Valerie Post from Florida died just this week after being in a medically induced coma for a while. They delivered her baby by C-section but her condition worsened. From What I read she went to the hospital with a backache, sore throat, and a slight fever. She was only 24 years old. There are quite a few pregnant women that have sadly passed that had no underlying medical conditions. It is just what you think is best for you and your unborn baby.  I am definately getting it as soon as it is available, I think the benefit of the vaccine outweighs the risk of the virus. It is going around like crazy where I live in Texas and I had to get tested for it yesterday.  I will be going back to the doctor today to get my results and it is very scary, I am 31 weeks pregnant.  I have spoken with my doctor and the vaccine I will be getting is not a live virus and it is thermosil free.  My husband who has never had a vaccine got his regular flu shot and will be getting the H1N1 vaccine being that our little girl will be born during flu season.  We don't feel we are putting our child at risk, we feel we are trying to protect her.

I am currently sick with the flu right now and I will tell you that I am 23 weeks pregnant.  It really is not that bad but make sure that if you do get the flu you get the antibiotic tamiflu to clear it out of your system.  I was not even planning on getting the H1N1 vaccine since it is such a new vaccine.  The regular flu shot has been around a very long time and I would definitely trust it more.  But, I have only had the flu shot once and got very ill from it.  The doctor suggested that I get the regular flu shot but said it was completely up to me and my family.  I just want to let you know that even if you get any type of flu syptoms (symptoms) the docs will not test for the H1N1 anyway since they say it is too risky for people to be exposed to the virus and just give out the tamiflu as a precaution.  So, I am letting you all know that it really is not that severe of a virus unless you have major health issues.  

But remember it is everyone's personal decision whether they get the vaccine or not.  I personally will not and agree that it is way too new for me to trust.

Melissa: I've heard many different cases where people have other medical conditions and some that don't. But the fact that concerns me is that so many pregnant woman are dying from it. It's scary!!! I was just reading where 6% of H1N1 deaths are pregnant women - That's alot!!!

I do think whoever does plan on getting this vaccine, that we all stay in touch and update as to how we are doing after the vaccine and also if you are p/g how your baby is after birth....

Just be very careful where you get the statistical information regarding the deaths in Pregnant women.  I read on the CDC website that they are basing the statistics on past pandemics in 1915 and 1959 and that was a long time ago.  Today their are many options and medicines that help aid in the flu and help anyone especially pregnant women get over the flu without complications.  Also, most of the deaths in that timeperiod were actually from complications from the vaccine itself not actually the flu.  

Just one more thing to note that the 6% is based on the entire population not just the USA.  

Just take the precautions and if you feel the vaccine is right for you, then do it but I will not be getting it.  They actually just started testing this vaccine in pregnant women the second week of September.  Just something to think about.

This is research done on it after it hit North America. All of these cases have occured in the States. They currently have about 120 pregnant woman who have already enrolled in the research and have already received the vaccine.

Yeah, I did read that, thank you so much.  The problem isn't that they are testing the vaccine, it is actually that they do not know what the long term effects will be.  I do not think that the vaccine would be as much of an issue if it was tested longer but if I was someone in the health care profession, I would probably be worried about it as well.  I am not saying not to get it, I am just questioning the length of time that it has been used and tested.  And of course, that is an individuals decision.  My son is 11 and I have never refused to get him vaccinated since it is so important to do but he will not get the new H1N1 vaccine.  

I just want you to know that I am not putting you or anyone down for getting or not getting the vaccine.  I would never do that.  I totally respect yours and everyone else's opinion on this matter.  This is not an easy decision to make along with all of the other worries that pregnancy brings.  I am just not sure how much I truely trust our Government no matter who is in charge.   Just recently I had a recall on medication that I was taking but of course the FDA did not notify anyone until 2 months after they found the mistake.  This is rather scary since the recall was based on a superdosage of a medication which they said could be from 10 to 20 times the actual dosage.  Which would mean that it was an extreme overdose for everyone that took it.  Now, I will have to monitor my baby for the rest of her life since they screwed up.  Other wise if they would have said something 2 months earlier then I could have stopped the medication and saved myself and the baby alot of heartache.  As you can see, it is hard for me to trust what the Government says regarding a new treatment.  

I trust my heavenly father over any of them or anyone for that matter.

I'm not putting you down for not getting it and I do respect everyone's decision. It's still hard for me - I keep going back and forth whether I'm going to get it or not. I'm not due until Feb and that is right smack in the middle of the flu season. DH and I also have a trip in about 4wks to go to Puerto Rico that we won...But my SIL is an ER doc and she is sending me the good face masks to wear on the plane. Also, I'm thinking about how I can further protect myself. When I do client's intake forms, I'm thinking about asking them if they've had any flu-like symptoms in the past 48hrs or so and if they have some sort of respiratory thing going, then I will wear a mask to do their massage. I don't want to put myself at anymore risk.
BTW: Since you currently have H1N1, how are you feeling? What were your symptoms that led you to see the doc?

See, that is the thing I do not even know if I truely have the H1N1 virus and neither do the Docs.  On Monday, I started vomiting around 1am and did not stop until around 6 am and had the chills really bad.  Then I started getting a fever and it continued no matter if I took tylenol or not.  My fever was 103 and the doc told me that if my fever ever goes above 100.6 to call them.  So, I originally called on Monday and she asked if I thought that I might have the flu and I was not really sure and told her that i would like to see how I do over the next 24 hours.  So, this morning, which was actually 48 hours later, I decided to call the doc. again since my fever and nausea and not eating has not going away.  They ordered the tamiflu for me an my husband but the peditrician did not see the necessity for my son to be on it.  So, that just totally confused me.  I took the meds. but now I feel even worse so i just hope that the meds will not cause me more issues.  I asked the doctor if she thought that I had the virus and she said that they are not actually testing for it since it takes too long to test for the virus and by that time you cannot treat it with the medication.  

Just all sounds so fishy to me but I want to trust the doctors.  I just pray that they know what they are doing but why is it that my son is not being put on the meds but my husband was put on them.  Just not sure.

I hope you feel better and hope you don't have the virus.  I came in contact with some one over the weekend who had H1N1 and later I started feeling bad.  I had a low temp. of like 99.5 and just didn't feel good. I went to my family doctor yesterday and they did a blood test for H1N1 and told me to come back today for results.  Well they didn't have them, it takes up to five days to get results just like you said.  I felt better so I didn't get the tamiflu I don't think I have it.  Did your OB say anything negative about the tamiflu?  I called my OB's office and they told me not to take it.  I am so confused because it's supposed the one thing that helps.

My real main issue was that my temperature was not going down at all and I could not eat anything since food just made me nauseaus.  Also, I lost 7 pounds over three days and that really started concerning me.  I have drank plenty of fluids which is what the OB told me to do so that the baby was still getting the nutrients.  I have only gained 10 lbs so far and losing 7 concerned me so that is when I decided to call the OB again and let them know.  From what I read about tamiflu, if the benefits of taking the antibiotic outweigh the risks to you and your baby of getting worse from the flu then it is definitely safe to take.  

My OB was the one that prescribed the Tamiflu to me but I still am concerned if it is definitely safe.  I was feeling a little better and then I took the first dose and a couple of hours later I felt terrible.  Maybe since it is so strong of an antibiotic it just definitely kicked my butt.  I am going to see how I feel tomorrow after taking the second dose tonight and will let you know how I feel in the morning.  

One thing that is truely comforting is that the baby is moving around all the time.  I hope that all goes well for you and that they do not find that you have the virus but I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

What I find stunning is how everyone who is all for getting the H1N1 shot aren't looking at the big picture. WHY WHY in GODS NAME would you risk your lives and babies lives with a LIVE virus? YOU are trying to avoid the swine flu but will inject yourself with it. Makes no sense. People who trust doctors make me laugh. The doctors are PAID to have you take drugs or get injections, they know JACK POOP about what is in the H1N1 shot and yet they feel they have the authority and the knowledge to say yes it's safe? Do you not know about how many people who were perfectly healthy and hardly ever got sick but once they got the regular flu shot they were never the same from there on? They got so sick from getting the flu shot then caught colds/flus like there was no tomorrow. I know of at least 2 people personally who will vouch for that. Please visit www.cdc.gov for details of the vaccine.  There are three forms of the vaccine being produced and only one form is with the live virus which is NOT being offered to pregnant women.  The other two forms are non-active,(dead virus) forms.  One has thimerosal and the other does not. Thimerosal is a perservative used that does contain trace amounts of mercury so make sure if you get the vaccine that you get the form with out the thimerosal in it.

I leave this house maybe once a week.
I don't have close contact with anyone exept for hubby and my daughter.

Hubby signed up at his work last month though to get it when it comes out because he works in a prison and there's already been reported cases at the other prison. And with inmates being transferred from his prison to the other one, and from the other one to his one-
it'd be probably pretty good for him to get it.

after alot of reading up on the internet,there is no way im getting the h1n1 shot.im 10 weeks pregnant and im not putting my unborn baby at risk..
i think its way too early to know what side effects it will have in the futher.my bean is so small now i cant imagine putting somthing like this into my body,god knows what will happen..
im sure il be shot down for saying this but i got a paper in my door a few weeks ago that had an article about the vaccine in it.it said that the vaccine is being made by a group called,i think it was Braxton.apparently there the same group that brought out a vaccine years ago that was contaminated and alot of ppl got very sick and died.well thats what i read anyway. i wont be getting it
