Gestational Diabetes HELP!

by Hyena5, Apr 25, 2008 12:28PM
So I am only about 8-9 weeks along now and my Dr. wants me to watch my sugars (I'm high risk-and have had gest. diabetes before) I've apparently been having symptoms of it. I hate watching what I eat now!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so hard when your pg!!!!!!!!! If I am not nauseated and have my mind set on a particular thing I can't even eat that because it sky rocket my levels :( I feel horrible when I eat any bread or pasta or rice.........I KNOW I can eat some but how much. Does anyone else have this problem and if so what is your diet like??????? What do you like to eat? I'm having a very hard time adjusting. I just want some suggestions of what's good and healthy for my baby that's not too high in sugar.

you can eat the stuff it all depends on the portion size.  I have gestational diabetes right now and I am watching what i eat and check my sugar level 4-5 times a day.  15grams of carbs is 1 carb choice.  If somethings have fiber in it and the labels says more then 5g then you can subtract the grams of fiber from the total carbs which will reduce the amount.  I was told that i could eat up to 17 CHOICES a day, but that is based on where i am at in my pregnacy (31w3d) and my weight.  I don't come anywhere near that amount a day and have been doing really well keeping it under control.  You basically have to spread the number out throughout the day.  Also you have to eat breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and then a snack before bed, they say to do this to keep you numbers in control b/c if you don't eat your liver automatically will push out sugar into your blood thinking that your not getting enough, and that will cause your numbers to skyrocket.  If you want to know more then feel free to ask.

PS> don't forget to watch the serving sizes on the label b/c thats what the carbs is based off!

What do you like to eat?? and what do you snack on?? Example of what you ate yesterday for example maybe??

Breakfast- bowl of cereal (usually rice krispies)
snack-  apple, if i'm really hungry i'll have a few crackers too
Lunch-  smartones tv dinner
snack-  smartfood popcorn (less carbs then chips and better for you so you can have alittle more then you would be able to if it was chips and fill up a little)
Dinner- chicken breast, pasta or potatoe, and a veggi.....some veggies are free and don't count against you but some do...so be careful) salad
snack-  usually fruit or smartfood popcorn

I just had my glucose test yesterday also and I'm freaking out about it.  Did you find out because of the 1 hr test.   I was so sick in the beginning and hardly kept anything down and didn't gain anything.  Now I don't have a huge appetite and have gained a ton.  Do you think that's a sign?

YUM! Sounds good actually I can handle that!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't been snacking I am so scared to eat anything and that is probably just hurting me.....and the DIET foods are pricey! I'll have to look into the things you just mentioned though

I failed both the 1hour and the 3 hour horribly.  I was very sick in the begining and lost 10lbs, so far at 31w3d i only weigh 6lbs over my normal weight.  I am a very picky eater and found that the hardest part for me was remembering to eat every few hours and to look at the carbs in the food, i was orignally writing down everything i eat and keeping track of the choices, but now i just do it mentally and have been doing really well. Also pricking your fingers all the time sucks but i am happy that i don't need insulin or anything like that.  My sugar levels are staying relatively normal and i haven't been having many side affects at all.  The baby is measuring right on track and NOT bigger, which is something that can happen when you have this.

Sounds like your doing great then! That's good to hear..... I haven't had to deal with any of this in 3+ years so I had forgotten about all of this. I am always checking the SUGARS and fibers and not the carbs on labels. Your info has brought back some memories! Thanks for your help I don't know how I am gonna make till December! Maybe I won't fail the 1 hour though and I won't have to start pricking. My Dr. just said I had some symptoms that showed I hadn't been watching my diet. Which I hadn't when I first found out about being pg again which was really early along and when I knew we were trying. I had ICE CREAM EVERYDAY. I was eating sweets of all kinds just becuz I was trying to get it out of my system before my Dr. told me I couldn't have it anymore. Sure enough on my first visit with her she was like YOU NEED TO WATCH YOUR SUGARS YOU KNOW THE PROBLEMS YOU CAN HAVE.......
