Glucose Test

Glucose Test

Hello.  I had my 1 hour glucose test completed this morning.  The range (I'm told) is 70-139.  My result was 139.  I see the doctor next week and I'm guessing she'll have me do the 3 hour test since I'm at the cut off.  Has anyone else had to do the 3 hour test?  What is it like?

My 1-hour result was 137. They like it to be less than 140 but some doctors want it to be under 130!!!

So they most likely will have you do the 3-hour. The 3-hour means you stay at the lab for three, long hours. Bring a book!

You'll have to fast the night before and the morning of the test. When you arrive, they'll have you down a more intense version of what you had at the 1-hour. Then they'll draw your blood to get your initial result.

Then, every hour they'll draw your blood again for a total of 4 blood draws.

It can make you feel woozy, light-headed and if so, let the lab people know. They may have a place for you to lay down. It didn't affect me at all until after I got home and ate lunch!

one thing my doc told me about this one is to make sure to eat plenty of sugar before the 3 hr test (the week ahead of time) so your body is used to processing it regularly.  she said a lot of people cut back on the sugar thinking they were doing so to help the baby incase they had GD and by doing that they were making their body work hard on the day of the test.  she said to eat a king size snickers two days before your test.  good luck.  ps tons of people fail the first test and pass the 3 hr test.

Good info to know, ladies!  Thanks!  I am not really looking forward to possibly having to do the 3 hour test, but hopefully, it will rule it out.  I was really totally shocked at how high my result was b/c I have never had a blood sugar problem...ever!
Thanks again!

You can't CHEAT the test. The rule is to actually eat as you normally would; not increase or decrease your sugar intake (btw, it's actually CARBS that would be more worrisome, not sugar). So just eat like you always do. Your level sounds normal so I would think you'll pass the 3-hour with flying colors!

My doctor just called me and said that she wants me to do the 3 hour test Friday morning.  She also suggested I bring a book ;).
