Hello....I'm 34 weeks pregnant and just received a call from my doctor's office informing me that I tested positive as a carrier for Group B Strep. I'm freaking out because I have never heard of this before and know nothing about it. Because I am a carrier, does this mean it will never go away? And what will happen to my baby? I have so many questions and I dont see my doctor until Thursday! Anyone have any experience with or knowledge on Group B Strep?
Group B strep (streptococcus) is a commonCommon cold bacteria. It can grow in a woman’s vagina, rectum, or urinary tract. It is almost always harmless in adults. But in rare cases, a womanWomen's way who has group B strep can infect her baby during the birth. Infection can cause serious illness in the newbornNewborn jaundice. The good news is that treating the mother during labor reduces the risk of the baby becoming infected. And if a newbornNewborn jaundice is infected, the infection can be treated.
I found this online. I always test positive for this and I have 5 kids. All that happens is they will give you an IV with antibiotics while you are in labor. This will keep any infection from spreading to the baby. It is very commone. Hope this helps.....And good luck on your deliveryC-section Delivery presentations Infant care following delivery!!
Michele is correct with given information.... I have also been tested positive previously for the same and heard that a big percentage of women get it during pregnancy. Good luck and dont worry about it just make sure you tell them about it when you are in labour and they will take care of it...
Yepper she is right. I tested positive for it with my first pregnancy...and negative for it with my second pregnancy. So I guess it can come and go. Its really not anything to worry about. You just need to make sure that you have the antibiotic when you are delivering. Thats what they told me anyways...and my kids are A. OK!
Thanks everyone! All the information has really eased my nerves. I'm just glad there are other people out there that have experienced this with no problems to the baby!
