Group B Strep...Any one have it?

Group B Strep...Any one have it?

I just got back from my 38wk check up and was told I am still 2cm and 50% effaced...I don't think my baby boy will ever decide to come out!

Anyway, I was also informed that I tested positive for GBS. I know I will need IV antibiotics during L&D, but what threat does it pose to my baby?

I was told after my first visit that I have Group B strep. Apparently they just treat you while you're in labor. If you're treated during labor through the IV or whatever, you have almost a zero chance of passing anything to your child. It's when doctor's don't realize you have Group B strep and you have the baby without medications during labor that problems arise. It is now common for doctors to check for this for that very reason. I was told not to worry. Something like 30 percent of women have it.

Best of luck!!

hi my/i had group b strep with my first pregnacy and was not able to get the iv in time so they had to do an emergency c-section because my son stopped breathing and i was not able to get the iv in time/therefore my son developed menjitus which was very severe/please please make sure you get the iv you need before you have your child vaginally/thank god my son was treated and is fine he's 5 now

I had GBS during my first pregnancy (so I believe they will automatically give me the IV this time, too).
The main thing is that if you go into labor you get to the hospital ASAP. Whether your water breaks or not and whether your contractions are coming every 5 minutes for one hour (the recommended time to wait until going to the hospital). If you have GBS, you should get to the hospital as soon as you can and let them know immediately that you DO have it. That way they can go ahead and start the IV drip of antibiotics. Even if they end up sending you home if it turns out you're NOT really in labor, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Luckily, my water broke last time so I knew I needed to get to the hospital anyway. As soon as they put me in a room they started the IV.

Good luck, and I hope the ball starts rolling very soon for you...I know how miserable the end can be! LOL

hi natemomma, im in the same position as you (no strep B) but 2% dialted for 3 weeks and almost 39 weeks pregs...and no baby yet!!!! i know how u feel! (awful)

my friend had strep B and its not a big deal at all she had twins and both her babies are perfectly fine. I would not worry a lot of woman test postive for strep B.

good luck, feel good and im wishing you a quick and easy delivery.

as long as they give you 2 doses of the antibiotics while in labor and they get it to you before you deliver than there isn't a risk..i had it and my baby came out fine

I tested pos with my first pregnancy.  You are supposed to get 2 doses of IV antibiotics so far apart.  I got the first dose, but then my labor went so fast I didn't get the second.  The neonatologist monitored my daughter's white blood cell count for the first 48 hours to make sure there was no signs of infection and she was just fine.  The chances of the baby getting ill are small but it can happen.  If for some reason you didn't get the full dose they will be very proactive and make sure there is no sign of infection shown.  If it seems like the baby may have been exposed antibiotics will be immediately started.
