so i had my swab for this last week and was told today that i was posative for it ..but the doctor said it was no big deal and it would be treated while in labour... so i left it at that and didnt really ask anything about it, but now that im home and ive looked over the net im seeing some stuff thats kinda scary and to me is not "no big deal" ....so if any of your have tested posative for group b strep can you tell me how your labour went?..what was done differnt? was the baby ok?....and any other info you could on the subject! im a first time mom so all of this is new to me and everything makes me worried!
Group B strep, although it sounds scary, is actually VERY easily managed as long as your Dr's know about it. Its a bacteria that can be found in your vagina, and can affect the baby during delivery
if they don't give you antibiotics at the time that you deliver. Also, just because you have it one month, it doesn't mean you will have it the next, so if you have any more children you could test negative next time.
The treatment, like I mentioned above, is just an antibiotic drip attached to your IV while your in labor. LOTS of women have Group B and have perfectly healthy babies. But of course if you are concerned bring it up with your Dr. at your next appointment. After all he gets paid to answer all of your questions and make sure that you are comfortable.
Good Luck hun!!
I have had 3 babies and tested positive for group B strep with one of them, my Dr too told me that it really is'nt a big deal atleast not until you deliver. group B strep is a normal bacteria in teh vagina and happens off and on to a lot of women and they never know about it. from what i understand from my doctor while pregnant the baby is protected from group B strep, but during the delivery
the bacteria can get in the baby's mouth and cause an infection which is bad for the baby. It is very treatable with antibiotics which is given by IV like niki_beth said. They usually like to start the antbiotics for at least 3 hours before the baby is born. In my exerience it did not effect the labor its self at all, except that They did'nt let me walk around with the IV in (that may vary be hospital/ doctor). after my baby was born my Dr asked me if i could stay at the hospital an extra day so they could make sure the baby was doing ok (I said hell yes free room service, I don't have to cook or clean, i just get to spend time with my baby and husband) they also scheduled a check for when the baby was a few days old and gave be a list of things to look for if she was going to get sick. It is'nt that big of a deal, but it does make you nervous although I think it is better to know about it so it can be treated.
Good luck and hope this helps oh and my baby was healthy and fine
