HCG Levels - Why the difference?

I am 5 wks and 1 or 2 days pregnant. I may or may not have already had a miscarriage. If I did, this would be my first. I have one DD wo is almost 4 who was concieved via IUI.  We were quite surprised to find out that I conceived naturally (with the help of Vitex). I went to the ER on Saturday with spotting (not even hitting my pantyliner) and severe cramping. Slight back pain too. Of course the tested my HCG level that night and it was VERY low, but was at 304. I went and had more blood work monday morning (9-24-07) and went to the ER again Monday night with a gaulstone issue. So they also took my HCG number that night too (different hospital). Today when I got the results back from both blood tests (keep in mind they are from the same day, but two different places) The one from Monday morning was 560 and the one from Monday evening was 450. My question is....Can there be a difference in numbers when done at two different places? I'm worried that the one in the evening is lower than the one from the morning....Any thought???  Thanks so much.

Honestly it doesnt sound good to me. Levels need to double every 24-48 hours in order for it to be a viable pregnancy... but the looks of it they didnt even double and they seem to be going down. I'm sorry that you are going through this I'll keep you in my prayers.

I've got to agree with alaysha on this.  I had a very early miscarriage a couple months ago (I was just a couple days late but had been testing + for about a week) and I started my miscarriage with just a tiny bit of spotting.  A few hours after heavy bleeding my hormones had dropped enough that I tested - on the HPT.

It is so difficult, even this early on, but at least you know that you can conceive on your own.  Keep trying!!  I miscarried in July and I am now 7 wks pregnant (I also have an 11 month old).  After my experience, I keep expecting the worst, but I take it a day at a time.  

Please call your obgyn and have him/her order bloodwork.  Either way, at least you'll know and have some peace of mind.  And if you've miscarried, take all the time you need to grieve (even if people don't understand), and keep trying when you're ready.  Best of luck.

Thanks for your responses. I gave another blood sample this morning, but I may not find out results until tomorrow. I think you are both right, it probably does not look good. I just kind of want it to happen so I can move on. I'm still spotting, but no cramping at all. My cervix is closed. I'm so confused. I haven't even had enough to hit my pantyliner. This is so frustrating. Thanks for your kind words. I'll update with any info.

I'm so confused!!! I just got my most recent hcg level back and it's 800?? Why is it still on the rise? Isn't 800 almost doubling, just not quite enough? I'm hesitant, but I did make an appointment to discuss ending the pregnancy (via D&E). If anybody sees this, please give your thoughts.

i think if your numbers are going up then that is good. thats what my doc told me. they say that bleeding during pregnancy isnt normal but it does happen just as long as it is not alot of blood and your numbers are still rising you should be ok i would think. try calling the american pregnancy association they might can give you a little piece of mind. 1-800-672-2296. keep us updated.. and good luck. read my forum and see what you think about my situation it would be under lavigne.

Thank you so much for the info. I just read it today, but haven't called yet. I will. I saw the doc again this morning and while peeking at my chart, I noticed my numbers from Wed weren't just 800, they were 877!! That to me is a big difference. As of right now, with my numbers still on the rise, we (myself and my hubby) have decided to let nature take its course. The doc fully agrees since the numbers are rising as opposed to leveling out or dropping. He also confirmed my cervix remains closed, which is good. He seemed to think the spotting I am having was fairly insignificant (phew!) I am trying so hard not to get my hopes up. I would love to be excited about this pregnancy but I just can't allow myself to be just yet. So, we will stick it out and get more blood work on Mon. If the levels are high enough by then, we can get an ultrasoud to see what's really going on.

Well, again my levels went up, but did not double. On Monday they rose to 2900 from 800 on Wed. I was thrilled, but the doc wasn't. They keep stressing that my levels should be doubling every 24 hours. Well mine are doubling every 36-60 hours......actually something like every 2.9 days. I was under the impression that this was still okay?? Well, we have decided to still wait it out and see. I have an appt tomorrow for my annual check-up (pap) so they are going to do an u/s to see if we can see anything. It may still be too early with my low numbers and I also have a tilted uterus (of course, just my luck!). Wish me luck!!!!

This makes me so sad to read this...To see the pain and confusion and frustration in my posts. This was four years ago and I really should have come on here A LOT sooner and told everyone that everything was just FINE. On June 1st 2008 I gave birth to a healthy and hefty baby byoy we named Jack. To anyone going thru this, my heart goes out to you. I know the waiting game is sooooo hard. I'm going thru something similar again, but haven't had a BFP yet. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS spot for about 5-8 days before AF actually shows up, but this time, I'm a day away from AF due date and no spotting at all EXCEPT I am one of those infamous "diggers" who searches and checks my cervix for any activity and I think I am causing some light red bleeding when I do. Doesn't hit the pantyliner, not even the TP when I wipe (sorry) but when I "dig up there" its red. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'll test tomorrow morning and then again Saturday morning when AF is due. I will try harder to keep you posted, instead of waiting 4 yrs to let you know! :)
