HCG levels rising but not doubling (Blighted ovum)
How long will HCG levels rise if you have a blighted ovum? My doctor diagnosed me with a blighted ovum 2 weeks ago. At that time I should have been 7 weeks 2 days (but I ovulate late so I may have only been 6 weeks along) and the ultrasound showed a sac of 4 weeks 4 days and my doctor said it was a blighted ovum. My HCG level at that time was 1700. They would not test my progesterone levels and so I switched doctors (having had a previous miscarriage
). With the new doctor I had another HCG test done one week later and it was 3400 and my progesterone was 8 so the new doctor started me on progesterone supplements vaginally (200mg). Today (5 days past the last test) my HCG level still rose but didn't double. It's now 4116. I'm just wondering if I do have a blighted ovum how long will they rise before they actually start to fall and I miscarry? I have another ultrasound scheduled in 2 days but am going crazy. Thanks for any information!!
. If you stop taking it you may start to miscarry. Progesterone tells your body to not menstruate; it tells your body you are pregnant. So without it your body will most likely expel everything if you have a true blighted ovum.
Thanks for your response. I do agree with it. It just seems odd that my HCG levels kept rising even before I started the progesterone. Plus the progesterone can't cause my hcg levels to rise so.....just weird. Guess we'll find out more with our next u/s.
It is the tissue causing your HCG to rise. If you have a blighted ovum the ovum is the one causing your HCG levels to plateau and slightly rise. But hopefully it was just a fluke and you're still pregnant and not going to miscarry. Please let us know what the U/S finds!
Nope. Had ultrasound today and it's still just a sac. Doctor is going to call about options. This will be my second loss. Hopefully our 3rd time will be the charm.
