HSG

by Atia_Julii, Sep 30, 2008 12:10PM
Has anyone had this test done?  I have one in a couple weeks, and I want to know what to expect.  Also, will I know results right away?  I had an ultrasound last week, or they were able to find a uterine polyp, but said my ovaries looked good, so I'm just wondering if from the HSG I'll know if my tubes are open and all that other good stuff?  The infertility workup takes so long. :-(

I think she misread HSG and thought it was HCG.

I had an HSG done.  It's no big deal.  So, don't be like me and scare yourself for nothing.  Make sure you take the antibiotics they gave you I think an hour before the procedure along with your pain reliever.  You go in and the doctor will insert a cath for the dye to go through.  You can see on the screen the dye moving through so you have instant results.  It's a little uncomfortable unless your tubes are blocked, then it can hurt a little if they try to push the dye through.  You will cramp and spot a little after the procedure.  So, bring a pad.  They will give you one, but they are the big bulky kind.  The dye is a reddish-purplish color.  Good luck!

Thanks Krushing!  Will you know the results immediately?

yes you'll know the results immediately while looking at the screen

I have had two hsg tests.  The first was not so bad, but I did not get the pain meds or antibiotics.  It was just recomended that I take three advil an hour before the test.  The second time I had to have the test re done after having an ectopic.  This time it was more painful because my tude was closed with "gaps" stiched together from the ectopic surgery and it was very uncomfortable.  If it becomes painful, it helps to know it only lasts about a minute, then you just have cramps.

yes you will see your cervix and ovaries and everything right on the screen with your doctor.  i had one, it was not painful at all.  i took a motrin like ym doctor told me to about 30-45 minutes before the appointment.  you might have slight bleeding afterwards but it should not last long, i think mine last for 20 minutes.
