I have ? for breastfeeding mothers or did bf...

by ashiepooh, Oct 16, 2008 12:18PM
Okay so my husband asked me, if this time around I wanted to invest in one of those boppy breastfeeding pillows.

Now neither of the other two times did I use anything to prop up my babies, well except when I was pregnant with my son my daughter layed her head on my belly, I know it's cheating but whatever it was there LOL

So with my son I never used anything, I just held him, or at night layed him next to me in bed.

Now my husband is asking because my back has gotten worse, I have herniated discs in my lower and upper back, and it's killing me already to hold either kid of mine.  Could be cause they both weigh 30 something lbs....

I just wanted to know if anyone has bought these and used them....So pros and cons about this thing?
Good or bad i'll take it as advise.  I know there is this other pill thing, and wraps completely around you, but I looked at it and didn't like it.  So boppy pillow, yay or nah?

I know it has it's advantages of the baby being able to use it for a tummy time pillow, and help supporting to sit up...  Just does it really work for breastfeeding?

I dont know firsthand, but I have registered for one. Some of my girlfriends swear by them..

I am interested to see what people respond to this as well.. Good question!

I bf'd my DD and have bought a boppy for this go around. I used a pillow with my first, but the boppy looked so much better. I have also heard great reviews for the brest friend too. I would recommend.

The brestfriend is the one I looked at, and didn't like...Mostly because I couldn't wrap it around myself maybe it was a super small or something.  But i'm not even that big.  My friend said it has this nice bump for the babys head, but she didn't like it...  I dunno..  I hope some people can give some good advise on it.

I mean the boppy pillow really does look like it would help, but it's one thing to think it will and get some good advise!

Boppy pillows are awesome!!!  I don't have any kids yet, but over the summer I was a nanny for a 2 month old little girl.  I used the boppy most times I gave her her bottle, and a lot of times when I was just holding her.  It was a lot more comfortable holding her that way...my arm didn't get so tired.  Especially when she fell asleep and just looked so precious that I didnt' want to go put her in her crib!

I'm actually considering getting one now, even though we're not sure if I'm pregnant yet.  I read a lot, and I used to boppy to prop my book up over the summer, so I want one now just for that!

By the way, the baby's mom used it for breastfeeding as well, and I don't think I saw her more than 5 times over the summer that she didnt' use it.

I didn't have a Boppy with my 1st and I was given one as a gift with my second... I was really excited when I first received it b/c it's beautiful and soft - I tried and tried and never got used to using it. With newborns I found that regular pillows worked best for me and lying down to nurse gave me great support when I had a sore back.

I am now nursing my 4th child and I still don't use the Boppy... and it's not good for tummy time either though I have seen moms prop their babies up to sit with Boppy (not recommended by physical therapists).

To make a long post short... if you're not concerned about spending the $40-50 than why not? If you're frugal than I would try to borrow one and test it out first to see if it works for you. Otherwise... you can get great support using regular pillows and/or rolled up blankets to support your back and the baby while breastfeeding.

Best of luck!!!

It was.  Now, I was only taking care of her for the summer, since I'm a teacher, so she was less than 5 months old when I left.  I'm not sure how much more difficult it would be once she was bigger.  But for the 3 months I was there, it worked great.

To milkmama:  why don't physical therapists recommend using a boppy to help the babies sit up?  Lily was just too young when I left to start trying that, so we never did, but I was just wondering.  Does it hurt their back?

Boppies are wonderful!!! Definitely get one. They're super for nursing, and help w/a bad back. My hubby even likes to "wear" it while sitting on the couch to have more support when cradleing the baby. We actually have 2 - one at our house and one at grandma & grandpa's because we're over there so much. Plus baby can use it to sit up, tummy time, etc... later on. I vote a strong yes! :)

Boppies are amazing and on a Top Ten List of must-haves for parents. You can use it to breastfeed or bottlefeed! I used it for everything. I actually own TWO. One of them has a bunch of toy attachments and the other is a regular nursing pillow.

When you give birth your body is so weak, including your arms. So it's nice to have the extra "help". Also, your arms get tired FAST as you're not used to holding 6-10 lbs of baby all day long. So the Boppy helps keep your arms from going tired.

If you have a bad back, it's a DEFINITE must have.

JoyRenee~ My husband just read your post and he said exactly this "That's it we're definately getting one, you have a bad back and she says it's a must have!"  AHAHA  I just started laughing!

Babydreams9~My husband also said "Great I can wear it to on the couch, that's awesome cause I get tired of holding my arms up!  Maybe we'll get two"

AHahaha, I was figuring one way or another I was going to get one, but I know I wanted some input as well, and I hope it's helps the others too!  If anyone else has input it's more then welcome!

I got the walmart brand of boppy.  I never used it for bfing but you could.  I just really loved it because it was a seat too.  It was the normal u shape like a boppy but it had a strap to hold the baby in.  It looked sooo comfortable!  My husband and I were very jealous of my son in that thing.  He loved it.  I didnt pay too much for it, maybe $20 and it was well worth the money!

About propping babies up to sit... while every baby learns and develops at his own pace babies do follow a pattern of development. Propping a baby up to sit before abdominal and back muscles are developed and ready can possible delay or weaken other developmental milestones. Obviously propping a baby up for a few minutes here and there isn't going to do any damage...

Sometimes babies who are frequently propped up to sit will eventually learn to sit up - maybe even as early as 4 or 5 months but they may not be able to get into or out of sitting position on their own and I have seen this cause delays in crawling, rolling etc.. Some babies may have weaker shoulder girdle muscles due to the fact that they sat up during the times that they would have benefited from playing on their tummies, rolling etc..

I didn't mean to cause any alarm etc.. just something to think about. Healthy babies mostly find their way and develop at their own pace... babies who may have been born with slight weaknesses, hypotonia etc are the ones more likely to be delayed in other developmental milestones if they are propped up to sit before they are ready...
