Oh goodness this could be a long list.  Can I recommend going on the babies r us website and downloading the buying guide.  It could be a great place to start.  Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding?  Do you need to know what to buy for the nursery or just what to get in general?

I'm still only 16 weeks, but the Babies R Us guide and connorethansmom's guide are very helpful!!  I think I'm gonna start now!  =D

A few ex. things you will need because you are having a boy, is/are you planning on getting him  circumcised? If so, you will need gauze Pads and petroleum jelly for that. And I have also found that alcohol wipes that are individual wraped are very useful for the unbillacored(sp).

I nixed the guaze pads, even when they were extremely lathered up with A&D ointment they still would get stuck to his woohoo and it was terrible having to tear it from his already raw skin.  We just drenched his diaper with the ointment and put it on instead without the pads.

I did the same thing as Mami123 with the circumcision. I NEVER used the gauze. I remember it had gotten stuck to it so bad that I had to get a wash cloth of warm water and drench it just to get it to come off easily. If you just pile the ointment on his weewee and diaper then he should be okay.

I know I cant beat the list that was posted above lol but some things that came in handy for me were my bottle sterilizer, wipes warmer, cloth diapers for burping and changing diapers on the go. Hand sanitizer, alcohol pads, and I loved having a CD player in babies room to help soothe him when he would sleep.

I think it depends on the person, because I never needed 6-8 fitted sheets. You can do fine with 2...one emergency one in case the other one gets wet. You'll be doing laundry all of the time...it's not like you'll have pee/poo sheets sitting around, so they'll be ready to put back on the bed in an hour or two. I agree with the 12 cloth diapers and the 3 or 4 nightgowns...I loved both of those. I've never owned a baby gate...never used cotton balls...tweezers...sterile bandages. You'll need gauze pads if you're having a boy and getting him circumsized, but my hospital sent me home with plenty. I own 2 pack-n-play sheets, but could have done just fine with only 1 of them. The trick with the sheets is to get waterproof pads and lay your newborn on them at night. They can't move, so if they leak, you just switch their clothes and put down a new pad. Gerber makes lap pads, but they're kind of small. I just recently found larger ones at Big Lots for $3 (Gerber), so I actually bought a couple of them for my next baby (not even pregnant yet, but would have loved them for my son!). I guess you might get 2 changing table covers, because sometimes you have accidents.

Everyone is different. Don't feel overwhelmed with the long list because you will never need some of it/won't use it until they're older. I thought I was all set for my son two years ago, but you definitely learn as you go along and decide on what items you need. Also-with the humidifier, my son's doctor told me to get a cool mist humidifier...not a warm one. Check with your pediatrician to see what they recommend before buying one!

That list pretty much says it all.  You need a lot of stuff for the baby but here are a few of the things that I would suggest.

The Podee hands free bottle - more expensive but I LOVE them, great for gas or colic (Dr Brown bottles worked good too), But it's diffrent for each baby.  You might want to get or maybe borrow and steralize a couple diffrent bottles to try with you baby before you go spend a lot of money on ones he/she won't like or use.  Same goes for a paci if you are going to use one (my daughter was picky).   I also love the boppy pillow.  The blankets that the baby can wear (wraps) are great, Oh and some kind of baby carry on your chest thing (again everyone has their favorite so I'd try them out before settling on one).  Oh and I had a small cooler in my car so the bottles stayed good, also had a bottle warmer that worked in the car (LOVED IT).  I have way more clothes than was mentioned before but the easiest in the beginning for us were the sac (long gown open at the bottom) an the footie one pieces that snap up.  We used a LOT of bibs.  Oh and wash the baby stuff in special laundry soap (Dreft) because their skin can get irritated easily.  The wipe warmer was a blessing and made changing easier.  You might want a diaper pail that eliminated odors and is easy or hands free to use.  And a thermometer that tests in the ear or templeis much easier, and a paci medicine dispenser thing was a lot easer when Sis was a baby (I know NUK makes one).  Well anyway, that's all I could think of to add and some of has is probably already been mentioned

illsurvive, cloth diapers are reusable diapers that you can wash. Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heinies make some. There's a ton of different companies.

I didn't look at the whole list. I went a little cross-eyed seeing it. Just get the essentials. A bed to sleep in with some sheets, a baby tub, toiletries, baby medicines (they sell kits), carseat. If you're going to have a baby shower, you'll get things you need!

Swing, bouncer, changing table (with pad and covers) are extra and nice things to have! I still use my changing table with my 16-month-old. Boppy is AMAZING for feedings. You'll need a highchair later. I like the feeding chairs that attach to a regular dining chair (takes up less room and costs WAY LESS).
