Labour Question

How long does it useually take to get from 8cm to 10cm dialated?  I'm currently complaining to my hospital because I went in being 8cm dialated and was left vaginally unexamined for 5 hours in a birthing pool with no instruction- my daughter was instrumentally delivered as my contractions slowed and I felt this could have been avoided

Hi I suppose it's different for everybody but my last labour ( my first was a c section). I went from 3-4cm to fully delivered in 1 hr so to me 5 hrs seems long with no checking

five hours is rediculous. that can't be right that you were not checked, considering your baby was not far away by 8cm dilated baby should have been born soon after and after an hour or so with no sign of baby, they should have been making sure everything was ok with you. your body does all the work with labour but still, you are someone's responsibility. i hope you and your daughter are ok xo

Wow! Thats brutal!!  I went from 5 cms at 12am to delivered at 12:33, you should have definately been checked way before 5 hrs had elapsed.  I'd be complaining as well!!

I believe the normal timeframe for the "transition" period (7-10 cm) is an hour or less.  It is the shortest part of the labor process.  When my youngest daughter was in labor, she was somewhat stuck at about 5-6 cm and then went all the way to 10 cm in about 20 minutes.  On the other hand, "I" seemed to have looooong stages no matter what, but even in that case, the transition phase was about an hour.  Making you wait 5 hours to be checked seems completely unreasonable.  I'm surprised the baby didn't deliver by then.  Was there any problems after birth?

luckily my dd was never distressed I was in a birthing pool for those 5 hours and was advised to breath through transactions as I'd "just know" when to push forceps delivery with episiotomy as my contractions were too short to be effective by the time I was examined at 10cm
