Low Progesterone Levels - Prescribed Clomid - ADVICE NEEDED!!!!

by nicholelea, Jun 24, 2008 04:05PM
Hello.  We lost our first baby in April of this year (two days before my 29th birthday).  The baby's heartbeat stopped between nine and ten weeks and I had a missed miscarriage.  My doc performed a D&C and then had me do a Day 21 blood test to check my ovulation.  My periods have always been crazy (between 35-55 days apart).  Today she told me that the blood work showed my progesterone levels are low and she prescribed Clomid to regulate my ovulation.  My question is - If I have to be on Clomid to regulate my ovulation, shouldn't I need to take Progesterone after conception and  to carry the pregnancy then too?  Unfortunately, I didn't get to talk to my doctor when she called.  She left a message for me to call the office and I spoke with a girl in the office.  So, if there is anyone who has dealt with this, please let me know what your doctor said or if you have any advice.  I'm not a doctor, but I'm confused and stressed out.  I do not want to go through the heart-breaking pain of losing another baby.  Thanks for any advice or wisdom.

I am with you on not wanting to loose another baby.  (I have lost 2... one at 15 weeks and one at 6 1/2 weeks)  My OB did not test me, but prescribed progesterone for me to take during the first trimester.  But, I did my own research and there are absolutely no studies showing that progesterone creams or pills will prevent a miscarriage.  So, I asked my fertiltiy specialist about taking the pills my OB prescribed and he said, "unless there is a blood test showing that you have a short leutal phase, taking progesterone can actually do more harm than good."  He also said that there are no studies stating that progesterone will prevent a miscarriage.  So, although there are women on here that swear by taking progesterone during pregnancy, it may not always be the right choice for you.

Has your doctor tested your progesterone levels on CD2?  That is when my fertiltiy specialist wanted to test mine, but I am now pregnant and obviously am unable to have that done ;)  For some reason, CD2 shows the doctors what your hormone levels are.  Maybe you are ok in that department... I really don't know.  Or maybe that is why your doctor has prescribed progesterone to help with ovulation... thinking that this will also assist with your letueal phase.  Either way, good luck and I would ask your doctor about taking it during pregnancy.

My cycles were the same way as yours. Sometimes it would be 30 days and sometimes I can go about 50-60 days with out one, they said I had PCOS. They would give me Provera (I guess this is a progestin, derived from Progesterone) to start my cycles and then take clomid to make sure I ovulated. Never took anything else any other time. Hubby and I tried to get pregnant for 6 years with one M/C in there.
As a matter a fact I was taking Provera to start my cycle when I found out I was pregnant. The first day of my LMP was October 29. As of February 20th   (my yearly check up) I still hadn’t had another cycle. During my checkup though my Doctor at the time (different one now) told me that she thought I was ovulating. So she told me to go get my grove on lol So I did  : )   She said that in the mean time I can also take Provera, that it wouldn’t affect the fact that I was trying to get pregnant. I waited about a week to see if it would come on its own. I started Provera on March 2nd to find out I was Pregnant March 6th..  The only reason why I found out I was pregnant was because I was having surgery to get my Gall Bladder removed, they did all the lab works and I got a call saying I cant have surgery I was pregnant. I did stop taking Provera as soon as I found I was pregnant. If your cycles aren’t regular maybe you can ask for Provera, you will have more chances of ovulating on a regular basis. Though like I mentioned earlier I didn’t have a cycle from Oct 29th and I still ovulated and got pregnant.
Good luck…hopefully this helps a little. Take care!!!

you should talk to the doctor about progesterone suppositories if your prog is low.  they are easy to use.  call the doctor back and talk about a game plan for TTC again,

First off Provera is used to induce menses and Clomid is used to induce ovulation. If you do not have a regular period DOC's will usually prescibe provera to induce menses before starting on clomid. If you already have low progesterone and have miscarried once. Then I would 100% recommend using a progesterone supplement like Prochieve starting on day 17 of your cycle and continue for 12 weeks if prego or stop it if you get your period. I also have low progesterone and have seen a few OB/gyne's and all of them put me on Prochieve along with clomid to get pregnant. No success yet but still working on it.

Clomid would solve the ovulation problem... if you were having an ovulation problem. But your prob seems to be with progesterone. Hmm... very weird. Speak with your doc for more clarification or find a second opinion! I would think you'd need to use the progesterone.
